in 1000 years.

Sure, Leif Erikson, some Chinese guy, etc. But CC caught the popular imagination and repeatedly demonstrated that people could safely and routinely cross oceans to other continents.

Populations of humans, animals and plants that evolved separately for a hundred thousand years were suddenly 30 days voyage away. Reading another XO thread about "race realism", I realized once again this is all just the post-script to Columbus's work. He sewed together the world in a way that Africans and Asians and Europeans and other could live cheek by jowl, and all of this "history", from slavery to WWII to Trayvon Martin, is all just detritus in the aftermath of his voyage.

He changed earth as much as Jesus. Perhaps you could add Darwin and St. Paul and Alexander to round out the top five, in no particular order.

That’s like saying Steve Jobs invented the iPhone. Too much credit to a figurehead. Who happened to be an insufferable asshole.

that's an outrageous thing to say.

Columbus's "crimes" are that he failed to see natives as deserving of the same rights he would accord to European Christians. Keep in mind there was barely a concept of "rights". There was a struggle for anyone to live past 30 and have children that survive, anywhere on earth. To manage survival, everyone on earth connected their identity to clans and religions and classified everyone else as an enemy.

So indeed, he did nothing to help the survival of natives and to the contrary killed and enslaved thousands of them, often personally.

But very few people alive then saw anything wrong with this. The very few that did were animated by a Christian theology that was super rare for the time. The natives themselves saw nothing wrong with enslaving and killing rival groups of people. No reason to think Columbus was more "evil", even by today's human rights standard, than any native tribal leader in Hispaniola.

In his plus column, he -- like Elon Musk -- risked his fortune and even his life on a dangerous dream to try to do things differently. He forged a path for starving and oppressed Europeans, who faced no future in Europe, to come to a dangerous, sparsely populated continent to try to build something better. We are all recipients of that, even if our ancestors were African slaves.

More than anyone else, he is responsible for European world dominance.

That's why libs hate him.
