Detroit was the silicon Valley of its day, richest city in America. read an article on how jobs that require certain skills are eventually mainstreamed and it used mechanics as an example. Sorry bro, but I'm not going to look it up.

AI will prob replace some docs (e.g., radiologists, which are already being replaced). I see PAs and nurses taking more and more responsibility from docs, so I guess nursing can still be CR.

If BigPharma invents some super meds to treat certain diseases, then it could wipe out certain sectors of the healthcare industry. I guess R&D Chemistry PhDs are always going to be needed.

Their incomes are still increasing and they're amoung the best paid doctors. AI doesn't seem to be having much of an effect.

It is only pretty recently that neural networks have shown super human performance on image diagnostic tests. There is going to be a delay before this technology is widely implemented, but it is difficult to imagine there won't be a greatly reduced need for radiologists over the coming 1-2 decades.

lets use ML to automate away a lot of menial tasks first, which it still hasn't done yet

I don't think automation is going to proceed in a simple way from menial to cognitively complex tasks. There is a reason why we have general algorithms that can achieve superhuman performance in abstract strategy games, and yet we are unable to robustly solve visual/motor control problems involved in robotics. Higher level tasks are hard for humans because they are evolutionary novel, but they aren't hard in an objective sense. There is a considerable amount of subconscious cognitive machinery built into our brains that allows things like walking and grasping.

the hard part is specifying a useful objective function that an RL agent can optimize. This is extremely difficult for full-scale software development, but I think we can in the near term create agents that can do very useful tasks like automatic bug detection at a high level of performance.

Nah, coding is increasingly less abstract. Most coders already are just API monkeys who learn a set of of say 200-250 API calls and thats 90% of what they code. They dont have the latent CS skills to write their own APIs or do real CS. Even things that once upon a time were required for even basic coding like proper memory management or really understanding compiler level shit are less and less common. This means more and more dumbs and turds are coding and making a living at it. Top people are few and far between. As the trend continues it all becomes commoditized and worthless.

You would have to convince me that coding doesn't require a solid ability to engage in abstract thought (roughly the level necessary for Algebra 1). Only about 15% of the population can do that.

You need to figure out how to best ingratiate yourself to global plutocrats. Hint: the answer is not being a code monkey. Think bespoke, high margin service businesses that let rich people pay for a touch of humanity in their exploitation of the 99% global underclass.
