Was Kubrick new Hollywood tho? If doing “new Hollywood” you should also include Boorman, Friedkin, Cassavetes, Cimino

I've really been into this period lately, by far my favorite Hollywood era. The aesthetic is 180. I'm working my way through the films from this list I haven't seen or haven't watched in years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hollywood#List_of_notable_films

I was trying to be a little over-descriptive in the title so people wouldn't ignore it.

The movie brats are basically just those guys

Can Coppola really be behind Spielberg based on his films during the New Hollywood era (Godfather I & II and Apocalypse Now are like consensus T10 Hollywood films of all time, plus Patton and The Conversation)?

As far as pure technical skill, I think Spielberg is tops in the group. Coppola and Scorsese made more interesting movies, though.

Have you seen the De Palma documentary that Noah Baumbach did? It’s just him bullshitting about all his movies. You have to watch it if you’re a fan.

Part of what I was looking at was overall track record; Coppola’s best movies are better than anyone else here, but he suffers from the drop in quality (and don’t give me the “but he had to choose what ever project he could after American Zoetrope collapsed!” sob story. Coppola’s financial woes are largely the result of his own hubris and he got what he deserved). Spielberg is dependable as hell—he’s still making commercially and critically successful major movies across genres today.

The top four are very close and then there's Lucas, whose inclusion in these lists is always puzzling to me (at least as a director).

Nolan has made the most 180 movies of all time - Inception, Memento, the new Batman series with Christian Bale. He wrote Inception from scratch and is a genius as far as filmmaking is concerned. Most directors base their movies off someone else's work (usually books) and then hire script writers to do all the grunt work for them. Nolan actually wrote Inception and it was 180 in original thought.

I like Scorsese, but all of his movies are very similar - he has made some 180 movies though, like the Departed

Spielberg's heydey was in the early 1990s, with movies like Schindler's List. I dunno if I have really liked any of his recent work
