I heard that when someone said to him "How will you replace your great losses from the Moscow campaign?" he said "One night in Paris should do it!"

Young Napoleon was actually rather different from older Napoleon. He was a lot more of a romantic idealist. He dreamed about becoming a writer, was an ardent Corsican nationalist until his 20s, and strongly supported republicanism during the early French Revolution. He also fell deeply in love with his first wife Josephine, but she rewarded him by CUCKING him with some cavalry punk named Hippolyte. This actually seems to have been a key moment for Napoleon, because after this he became a huge misogynist and took tons of mistresses; this is also about the time he shifted hard against Republican ideals and went down the path of reviving the French monarchy.

Like a french NYUUG. Amazing guy. Do you think cucking was a more common and accepted practice among the upper classes of Napoleon's time?

I'm not an expert on cuckoldry norms from the period, so I can't say. There was certainly greater overall toleration of male infidelity though it wasn't necessarily approved of. Interestingly the French revolutionaries really fetishized the nuclear family in a way that would be familiar to contemporary conservatives.

It's always down to sex in the end. I presume most monarchists living now are the opposite and fetishize the nuclear family, entirely opposite of the debauched lifestyles of the aristocrats of then. Only the roman ideal of the noble yeoman farmer ever really held weight for any length of time.

I wouldn't reduce the nobles to simply being debauched. Plenty of nobles were models of decency and restraint, it's just that those who weren't were perhaps more overt about it (or perhaps it was simply impossible to be as discreet about it). Louis XVI, for one, appears to have been loyal to his wife and had no mistresses, and there's no proof Marie-Antoinette had lovers either (though many think she may have slept with Axel von Fersen who was certainly very devoted to her).

huh, interesting. is the revolutionary argument there that the nobles are debauched, while the republic needs more good frenchmen and women to prosper?

i have a traditionalist friend who is obnoxious about the vendée, would be curious about scholarship on this issue.

It wasn't necessarily a nobles v. everybody else argument. Instead, it was based a lot on the principal of patriotism. In contrast to modern libs who tend to devalue the family and views schools, programs, etc. as a way to create citizens, the French revolutionaries viewed the family as the place where future citizens were created. This promoted what we would consider a rather traditional view of the family, because the most important thing a mother could do was raise strong patriotic citizens educated to love liberty, constitutionalism, etc.

to what extent are these sorts of values parallel to traditional french ideals, or specific to the enlightenment? you could also compare greater military involvement of poors: that fosters a family morality of the small folk, which i imagine would be contrasted with failing family lines of nobles, who no longer carry the predominant military duties

It's possible, and Josephine wasn't his first-ever relationship, but the savage cucking he received definitely altered his overall view of women and how he behaved toward them.

everything i know about napoleon's early life comes from the film "napoleon" (1927). how accurate was that film?
