isn’t it a random cold shithole town without a lot of resources that somehow has one of the world’s best medical centers and symphony orchestras?

Inertia from when Cleveland was a T5 US city. Also I believe the Cleveland Orchestra had a super-dynamic conductor for decades who really forged it into a musical great power.

And Cleveland also has some major top medical infrastructure. It’s just that the industry died, and with it, middle class life and much of the city.

It was a major industrial and commercial center, just like Detroit and St Louis were. Some serious old money then to pay for all the museums etc. Jones Day is still a proud “Cleveland firm”, even though it doesn’t do that much in Cleveland anymore.

previous decade, the foundations of Microsoft’s Bill Gates, the California real-estate and insurance magnate Eli Broad, the Walton family (of the Walmart fortune), and other billionaires from Wall Street to Silicon Valley had come to dominate charitable funding to education. Dubbed “venture philanthropists,” they called themselves investors rather than donors and sought returns in the form of sweeping changes to public schooling. In addition to financing the expansion of charter schools, they helped finance Teach for America and the development of the Common Core State Standards to increase the rigor of instruction.

Sheryl Sandberg, who vetted the agreement for Zuckerberg, e-mailed updates to Booker’s chief fund-raiser, Bari Mattes: “Mark is following up with Gates this week. I will call David Einhorn”—a hedge-fund manager—“this week (my cousin). Mark is scheduling dinner with Broad. . . . amazing if Oprah will donate herself? Will she? I am following up with John Doerr/NewSchools Venture Fund.” Doerr is a venture capitalist.

On September 24, 2010, the team described their plan for Newark on “Oprah.” “So, Mr. Zuckerberg,” Oprah asked, “what role are you playing in all of this?” He replied, “I’ve committed to starting the Startup:Education Foundation, whose first project will be a one-hundred-million-dollar challenge grant.” Winfrey interrupted: “One. Hundred. Million. Dollars?” The audience delivered a standing ovation. When Winfrey asked Zuckerberg why he’d chosen Newark, he gestured toward Booker and Christie and said, “Newark is really just because I believe in these guys. . . . We’re setting up a one-hundred-million-dollar challenge grant so that Mayor Booker and Governor Christie can have the flexibility they need to . . . turn Newark into a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation.”

The bit of history you all are missing is why the money left Cleveland.

The electorate intended to tax the shit out of monied people. They left. End result: rusted out Cleveland if today.

It was due to forced-integration public schools busing. There are a lot of cases of urban wealth enduring high taxes. Fewer of the middle class throwing their children to the wolves.

Correct. I experienced the start of this but before it had ruined the whole system; a few years later, the formerly strong public system in the suburbs was a wasteland.

The rust belt had (and has, to an extent) a lot of nice things. Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit all have amazing houses and buildings. In the era before material taxes, the wealthy used their money to hel their communities (which included their employees) and places like the Cleveland Clinic and Rosewell Park (Buffalo) (Hopkins, Mayo the same) were founded early by donors and have continued on their reputation to this day.

lake/river cities used to rake in the wealth. consider that even toledo has a top-notch art museum built with money from the glass industry, which was viable in toledo because the finished products could be shipped in bulk by water back to the east coast and beyond.
