To gtfo of my office. Six miserable months followed, but thankfully I never spoke to that service partner again, and then I left. Life is too short to be pushed around by shithead people and BIGLAW is full of miserable, shithead people.

It wasn’t even a dispute. The shithead dumped a bunch of his work he was responsible for on me and ghosted at the last minute and I had to pick up the pieces and do his work for him. This pissed me off and cost me a weekend. When he came to my office asking me to prep him for a client call (there actually was no call and he wasn’t the client partner for the matter) on the work that I had spent all weekend getting done, I lost my shit and told him to gtfo.

He turned around and immediately started trying to get me fired, which didn’t happen right away, but my lot was cast.

Service partners feel entitled because they’ve “paid their dues,” but they are forced to endure and take a never-ending line of shit about not having their own business, getting pulled into time-suck pitches, having to serve on stupid committees. They are all just as tired and fed up as everyone else, but they are such bootlicking faggots that they take it out by being lazy, shoving off work on others, etc. They are truly miserable and on the prowl to make others just as miserable as themselves.

service partners are all to aware of the precariousness of their own position, given that they're usually underutilized, questionably profitable, and are only around because of the graces of rainmakers. every associate is competition.

I think it's because service partners see mid-level to senior associates as competition. If they can't generate their own business, what really separates them from a 6th year associate? And, to make it worse, if you're in their group and get promoted to partner, you're in even more direct competition with them for work.

The irony is that they then are responsible for reviewing you and can subtly tell the rainmaker that "Jim just isn't cutting it, but I'm covering for him" behind your back. The thing you have to remember about biglaw is that all lawyers are spineless weasels and act accordingly.

VERY CR. Left biglaw almost 4 years ago. The one equity partner who is still my friend stated that one service partner (ironically the 'associate assignment partner') in our group used to shit all over any associate who billed high or was advancing rapidly. he got axed over expense account abuse last year, mistress related I think, but he must've tanked the careers of a few dozen associates

LOL. The assignment partner role is a dead giveaway that you're a shitty service partner with no business. If you had any juice whatsoever, you'd get out of that shitty, non-revenue generating role.

there's always one service partner in each group who inevitably shits all over associates no matter what. avoiding them is one of the keys to surviving in biglaw.

So a partner assigned you weekend work and then asked for an update after the weekend was complete, and this made you have a meltdown? Can't imagine why he might feel that would bear on your suitability for a job as a BIGLAW associate.

I was stressed out and admittedly lost my cool because I couldn’t hack working with gormless troglodyte partners any longer. Yes. That’s right. If he wasn’t such a complete dick, however, we all might have been able to get along.

I run a small firm with a couple other former colleagues. Nothing special to say what led up to it, just typical biglaw bullshit.

My situation wasn't special. I actually really liked my fellow attorneys but the clients of the firm were sadistic pieces of shit who took pleasure in providing unreasonable deadlines and making me jump on calls from holidays. My firm refused to push back on these kind of practices and I refused to live this way.

on my firms doc management system and billing system you can look up who the "billing attorney" is. if a partner is the billing attorney on almost nothing he's a service partner.

also this is the type of thing other associates will know if you ask.

Service partners don’t make the big $$$. Just look up their comp on the system or snoop around in their office until you find a bank statement or their login credentials.

LOL. I have a friend who shared a secretary with a guy on the management committee at his old firm. She was like "oh Bill Smith is a nobody around here." He asked her how she knew that, and she just handed him a list of each partners number of shares lol.

They are glorified associates and its a terrible spot to be in. The market for partners with no book of business is absolute zero. Service partners usually make double what they'd make on the open market. That's a scary position. The moment your sponsoring rainmaker turns on you, you are dead in the water.

Service partner basically means you are like some rainmakers all-star indispensable associate. The moment you piss off the rainmaker or decide to assert that you want to have a life and wont just do the rainmakers bidding, a new all star associate will take your place.
