The reporting was also a problem here because the media obsessed over completely irrelevant unrelated local stories-- i.e. somebody tied a noose around a tree at some point, but the victim had nothing to do with that. A school building had burned down, but the victim had nothing to do with that either. You have six black kids attempting committing what, as far as we know, is an unprovoked assault on a white victim and the media makes the story the unrelated bad acts of other white people. If six white kids did this to a black kid they would still be in prison, the media wouldn't focus on the unrelated bad actions of other black people, and the incident would be raised as an example of America's horrible racism in the other way.

The attackers lucked into it: Each of them lawyered up and shut up and reasonable doubt was created by the other five. Coupled with a media narrative that it was unaccetpable to hold black people accountable for their actions, and they got a free pass on attempted murder.

This really redpilled me because after finding all this out I was shocked at how easy it was to discover all this information on the case with just the slightest bit of effort to dig beyond the surface of the headlines, and being dumbfounded at how the media completely neglected their jobs and instead of mentioning all these clear cut facts on the case just inflamed racial tensions instead.

Not only did mateen post his motivations on social media etc. - he literally called 911 in the middle of the nightclub massacre to profess his reasons and motivations for his attack - he pledged allegiance to his muslim faith, isis etc, and literally said he's killing all these people in the name of his god / allah and that he is a soldier of islam. He's trying to scream to the world he's killing people in the name of his islamic faith.

Loretta Lynch promises transparency in this investigation - so the FBI releases the transcripts of mateen's call to 911 during the massacre - and every association / mention of his Islamic faith and his motivations is scrubbed from the released transcripts. The FBI give the justification that it's because it is violent rhetoric and can inflame other people who are like-minded. Obviously repubs jump on this as does the general public so there's pretty big outrage over this. FBI then releases the full transcript after the outrage - which meant their justification was complete bs if it was so hazardous they would've stuck to their decision.

The FBI didn't publicly deny what was said or mateen's motivations - but dems tried to downplay this to a ridiculous degree given the partisan battles over immigration / muslims as a heated issue in upcoming election, and the msm avoided the association wherever possible for partisan reasons. Mateen targeted gays too so it was the worst possible look for Islam at the time - how the msm handled it would've been hilarious were it not for how serious of a topic they were dealing with.

Notice the Vox article there's an obsession over the anti-muslim bias and the few inaccurate reports, not a mention of "this poor imam doesn't preach that stuff and isn't connected". As far as the public memory goes, republicans are awful because they made a racist ad against Dukakis. But it's not like Willie Horton is something they made up. He was a real guy and the facts of the story shock the conscience.

1) Signed into law in 1972 by a republican governer, Massachusetts had a furlough law for convicts, with the idea that for people getting out soon it made sense to give them some time away from prison to transition back into society and because it was somewhat self-enforcing-- somebody getting out in a year wouldn't fuck around with their release date by trying to escape.

2) Due to a drafting error, in 1973 the Massachusetts SCOTUS ruled that this right extended to first-degree murderers serving life without parole, because the law specifically did not exclude them. 3) That decision may have been correct as a matter of law, but obviously as policy this is a disaster; there’s no point in getting somebody serving life without parole used to being on the outside because they never will be and of course they’ll think hard about trying to escape instead of coming back to prison-- why the fuck would they come back?

4) Recognizing that this was a problem, the Massachusetts legislature sent a bill to the governor which would make first degree murderers ineligible for parole in 1976. By now Dukakis was governor. He vetoed the bill, claiming in a parody of shitliberalism that keeping murderers in prison would "cut the heart out of efforts at inmate rehabilitation." 5) Willie Horton was serving life without parole for his part in a robbery. Along with his accomplices, he robbed a gas station. After the teenage clerk cooperated and handed over the money, they stabbed him 17 times and left his corpse in a trash can.

6) Due to Dukais’s veto and Horton’s extraordinary achievement in not murdering anybody while in prison, he was given ten weekend furlough passes out of prison. On the tenth one, he didn’t come back because why the fuck would he.

7) From here, the story is better known; Horton broke into a home, assaulted a man and brutally raped his fiance. The suffering they endured that day has a straight line back to Dukasis’s veto of the “Keep Murderers in Prison” bill.

8) Horton is eventually captured by Maryland authorities who lock Horton up and, quite rightly, refuse to return him to Massachusetts in case the shitlibs decide to let him out again.

This is, of course, a valid campaign attatkc ad whether Horton is white, black, or martian. By declining to keep murderers in prison, Dukakis released a dangerous criminal and others paid the price for his shockingly bad public policy. It raises serious questions about his abilities to think logically or act in the public interest. There was always going to be a Willie Horton ad regardless of the racial makeup involved.

What’s more, it’s not like they cherry-picked the Willie Horton case. He wasn’t the only escapee from this program but he was by far the one that comitted the worst act (that we know about) while out:

We have innocent people suffering because of those two bad actors… and yet every time “Willie Horton” is mentioned libs are mad at the guy who made an ad alerting the public about these facts because Willie Horton happens to be black.
