you're (probably) working hard to make that much money and arent able to travel all the time

so if you take 1-2 nice vacations a year, i dont see the upside of pushing and shoving with the proles in economy so you can retire a month earlier when you're old and trembling and cant enjoy it as much as in your 30s/40s

that said i dont actually pay for biz cause i cant afford it, but if i were 800k i probably would

you're making up numbers, and i'm using your numbers. you said 5k in your op. i dont know how many people or how many trips we're talking about.

either way, 800k/yr income = 400-500 post tax. we're in the ballpark of of ~1% of net income

my point though is that at 800k you can essentially have your cake and eat it (fly biz and still retire in a reasonable time frame)

so your position is that your enjoyment of life in your 60s is > enjoyment of a flight in your 30s?

right, and extreme marginal expense for a minimal return flying biz for a few hours.

I don't mean a $1200 per night room. But if you are going to Maui for a week and pay $450 per night rather than $200, you are going to get a much nicer hotel experience for the entire week.

Versus a few extra thousand dollars for free shitty food/booze and a comfortable seat for 5 hours each way.

$5k/year only?

Realistically for 2 intl trips for 2 people, closer to $15-20k depending on where you’re going no?

I wouldn’t do it cuz why pay when you can do it all on points. And if you have $800k HHI, you can generate the spend necessary for the points. I haven’t travelled in Y for intl flights since I started playing the points game.

wait until you're ready to book to transfer. you dont want a bunch of miles sitting in an airline's account. they're more versatile in chase until you need them

availability is hit or miss. if your dates are flexible and you're not traveling over peak times, you should be able to find something even w/o booking a year in advance. also, availability is very good last minute when they start to release seats that they're being jewy with.

yes, people say 'a year in advance' is when seats open up but it's not actually a year on most airlines. it's more like 11 months, but it varies by carrier. it's 330 days on AA.

On flights over 5 hours I’m flying business class—have been doing this for 5+ years now. Business to Europe is about 3 to 3.2k ($800+- on coach). On 8-9 hr flights, the lie flat seats make a huge difference in comfort. If you’re flying farther (Asia) business class is in the 4K range. When you’re on 14 hour flight to Japan with another 5 hours to get to KL or HK, it is well worth the money.

So assuming the EXTRA cost of business class is:

$1200-1500 - cross country domestic - for bigger non flat seats

$2,200-2500 - to western europe - for lie flat seats?

$3,500-4,000 - to Asia - nice lie flat seats

Is there a general income level for which this makes sense? I feel like being rested is more of a function of flight time and eating weed brownies on the flight. But I have never had a lie flat seat so who knows.

Once you do you will never go back. My wife and I got upgraded once, 7 years ago, and we were still talking about the experience a year later. My next trip after that was a bit longish—9 hours on coach—and I was treading the flight. Instead of looking forward to my trip I was more concerned about being all contorted in coach...

my wife is small and fits nicely in coach seats. i suppose leaving her back there does not go over well.

It’s the whole experience from faster check in, lounge access, early boarding, not just the in flight lie flat seat.

It’s definitely one of those things that is difficult to downgrade once you’ve experienced it. But personally I wouldn’t pay for it unless I were making $1m/year and only for flights over 8 hours.

I dunno, I haven’t thought about it in terms of net worth but maybe like $7m+?

This is all moot anyway because you can get free biz tickets through Amex and chase even on a $300k income with a combo of sign up bonuses and about $50k of credit card spend at 3x-5x points.

More importantly, I used to to dread flying coach (it really kills my back) this would dampen my enthusiasm. Now, I can look forward to going away. Just knowing I’m not going to be stuck in cattle class the vacation starts after I book the flight.

I’ve been pulling in 350-385k/ yr steady for the past 6 years. Net worth over 1 mil. You definitely need to have a good cushion to do this. If you’re still paying off loans and not maxing out your 401k suck it up in coach.

I probably spent an extra 10-11k a year on business class flights for me and my wife; if I had an extra 10k a year I wouldn’t need it—I’d just dump it into index funds. That’s the threshold when I decided to start flying business

I never even pay for flights. I've been churning AA frequent flier miles since high school. I've earned over a million miles over the years. I havent oaid for an international fight in 15 years and ive been to dozens of countries. Sometimes I fly business with miles but rarely unless its close to the same as coach. I'm also 5'7 so coach is pretty roomy for me.

$5k? I wouldn’t pay that either. It’s offensive. You can find way cheaper tickets if you can’t use miles. I’m flying to Asia in biz roundtrip on AA for ~$1,900.

I might do up to a grand more than coach if it was a flight to Asia or something. Not that I ever have, I just use points. But an extra $5k per person? no way.

I'm surprised people think an extra $5K a year somehow doesn't matter when you're all a bunch of wagecucks. You're spending on a very temporary and emotional purchase geared towards your "comfort" and status.

$5K/yr starting at 35 is over $1.1 mil when you hit retirement age with a 10% annual return. Even discounting for inflation, that's a shit ton of cash for you and your family.

YO! It’s me. I’m the pumon that posted in the other thread earlier. I’m not some old Mr. money bags, just a dual big law household. Income will probably go down at some point. My money goes to a 6,500/month mortgage and a bunch of other expenses. I have 500k cash in the bank, 200k in 401ks, 200k or so home equity. I spend enough as is and don’t need to piss it away on business class. Also if you are flying biz class everywhere it would be a lot more than 5k per year.

6,500/mo is a 1.2-1.5M house, no? Not bad on that income if coastal city.

It’s not cash, it’s invested. Yes w/r/t the house. In hindsight I kind of wish I had bought something cheaper, but it might turn out to have been a wise decision in the end.

Buying a more expensive house is definitely wise if you find a safe filled with gold or an oil well in the basement. Otherwise, usually not.

But you're def making enough for that, even in my conservative view.

depends on the flight. if its over say 8 hours, springing for biz seems like a no brainer. youll arrive fresh from day one rather than exhausted and will get the most out of your whole trip. seems worth it if you have tons of cash.

for domestic flights or general short haul it seems like a waste.

5k is steep, but price depends on the route really. biz at about 4x the price of economy is reasonable i reckon. sometimes you dont have enough miles left or there are no award seats. if im flying singapore to boston, fuck if im going to do it in economy. ive paid 4k for return business on that route and id do it again if i couldnt get an award flight.
