To put this in perspective -- at the peak of Soviet nuclear submarine construction in the late 70's they employed about 23,000 people. The last time the had 28,000 employees was in 1958 when you needed that many people because CNC machines hadnt been invented yet and everything was done by hand. 28,000 people in 2018 with 2018 tooling...that is insanity. And of course, every last slipway has been retooled in the last 3-4 years.
But then one has to look at their order book. Its 2x what it was at the height of Cold War submarine construction. They hide the totals by claiming they are just upgrading old boats but old boats go in and nothing of the old boat comes out. The hulls that come out are completely new save the outer shell. It's not repair and upgrade work -- it's lull the idiot Yankees into a sense of complacency while we work on a dozen nuclear hulls at one go.
