Promotion to "counsel" is possible by year 9-10, but not guaranteed (it is treated like promotion to partner at many firms). My group has had some serious layoffs but I am safe for the short term at least and am getting very good work/client contacts. I may have an opportunity to lateral as a counsel in my current practice area to an amlaw 100 firm (PPP is over $1mm) and the firm would put me up for non-equity partner in a year. Thoughts/recs?

A partner took over the relationship handling of key clients and smaller ones went to the key senior associate (helped him cop breakfast).
