But yes, there's really no discernible difference between Titleist MB 695s and 718s. |

Titleist makes their irons about 2 degrees stronger and 0.25 inches longer now. Basically a 7 iron now would be a 6.5 iron 20 years ago. Callaway is even worse with this; their PW is like an 8-iron in many older sets. |

For reference, tiger averaged 297 yards per drive in 1998 (#2 on tour) and averages 304 yards per drive this year (#37). #2 on tour this year is 318 yards per drive. Gotta figure driver/ball technology are worth around 15-20 yards. |

Date: March 30th, 2018 5:06 PM Author: chrome indecent party of the first part Tiger's recent distance increases are a result of a lighter and longer shaft combination. He's now playing 44 1/2" (up from 43 1/2) and a 60 or 65gram shaft (used to play 75g). Those changes definitely make a difference.
I gained like 20+ yards when I started playing a Cleveland Classic 290 at 46" with a 43 gram ultralight shaft. Went from 270-275 on good strikes to multiple 300+ yard drives/round. I'm back to 45" and a heavier shaft on my new driver and I'm shorter (but straighter) again. |

I loved that club. Had a great feel and it hit it a ton until the face cracked. Hadn't found a driver that I really loved again until that Cleveland 290, probably because of it's old school looks and super soft/mushy feel. Feels a lot like persimmon/balata contact. I just picked up a mint set of MP-63s (3-pw, DG X-100s) with fresh grips at Golfmart for a little over $200. They lie board tested them for me and threw in lie and loft adjustments for free.
Those places also have plenty of game improvement type sets in the $70-$200 range. |
