"For there are two rules to keep at the ready--that there is nothing good or bad outside my own reasoned choice, and that we shouldn't try to lead events but to follow them."

But how do you distinguish an event you cannot lead from a reasoned choice you *can* make?

It's not about attempting perfect discrimination between events you can and cannot change.

It's about reducing your ego - to stop trying to control / change ALL events, and the realization that you're largely along for the ride.

This in no way implies you shouldn't put effort into reasoned choice - but that you need to learn acceptance, and that you are an actor in this show of life not the Director

coming at it from this angle still reeks of the kind of dualism that leads to an undue veneration of logic, even if stoics try to shrink the domain over which our rationality has dominion.

while i also prefer to think of our lives as riding an uncontrollable wave and that we can only make small changes in our tack, i don't agree that the methodology for making these changes is one that demands something like rationality maximization, not least because of staggering diminishing returns to rationality.
