not for a loooong time it's EXTREMELY hard to make $1M+ as in-house counsel unless you are in a leadership position. nutella likely won't get there until 2020, 2019 at best

1mm/year is GC @ public co. money. No way even PE pays that to anyone but the GC; even funds have to control ops cost to a degree.

Doesn't go against my statement, only GC's generally have the stock based incentive plans that push their compensation above 1mm. Asst. and Assoc. GCs almost never do, and will only get 1mm+ if they happen to be at a company that has much better than average stock price appreciation; which in turn will get their future grants reduced accordingly. Silicon Valley GC base salaries:

PA Networks: ~700k

Wageworks: ~300k

FireEye: ~400k

When you look at their stock award value, note that it usually vests over 4yrs. So, $2mm stock granted to FireEye's GC is vesting at ~500k per year; assuming stock price remains unchanged. Thus, her total comp is under $1mm a year.

Attorneys a tier below GC will earn 1/5 to 1/10th the GC's total comp; anything below the c-suite drops considerably when it comes to the equity portion of compensation. Their salaries are created by HR using comps and bands and have very limited/linear YoY growth potential. GC, on the other hand, gets their compensation determined by those unbiased compensation committees.

Even if that was the case (it's not), you think anyone short of GC at PE/Hedge Fund/whatever gets $1mm tossed their way when they're essentially a replaceable operational drone? Aside from maybe someone with a CCO role where they're dealing with SEC/FINRA and have some personal liability associated with their title, it'd be absolutely stupid to pay ops people 7 figures.

Per Glassdoor, assist/assoc/deputy GC's in SV base salary $250-300k. I know plenty of Facebook legal folks (they were my client) and aside from individuals who were hired early on that had unusual levels of stock grants, no fucking corporate counsel / prefix'd level GC / etc. is making $1mm there. Big Tech = HR departments that will provide GC w/ spreadsheet of comp bands and thus staff gets nothing ridiculously special in terms of comp.

I didn’t lie in the past about getting laid off from biglaw (and people gloated about my being unemployed) and I wouldn’t lie about it now. It’s quite possibl I have no job in 10 years if firm gets sold, but I expect to get a job afterwards anyway.

There are probably 3000 in-house attorneys making more than $1 million all in. In the year 2100, that number will be 900,000.

https://www.allegisgroup.com/-/media/allegis/mlaglobal/files/reports/2017-compensation-ihcs_2015-2016_full_2017 is interesting on this point. In a data set of 990 lawyers, median non-GC comp is $225k, with max reported comp of $1m. Very hard to make 7 figures in-house if you're not the top guy.
