I check/respond to email a good amount but actual work varies.

The vast majority of time I put in a few hours a day, during crises I am putting out fires and shit til late night/weekends/whatever. Thankfully the crises are few and far between.

you must be really senior to make 500K in house. you must report directly to the GC right? chances of making GC in a F500 and copping millions in executive pay?

Tbf I work in SF/SV where it's not that uncommon, and still isnt enough to buy a really nice home

The main routes to making that in SF/SV are 1. GC 2. be at a startup that hits it, or 3. senior counsel/AGC+ in bigtech with lots of RSUs

0 chance i'll make (or want to be) a random F500 GC. one guy i know is GC of a trash company, probably makes a million but LOL

I'm stuck at a $250k/year in-house gig with only 1 year Biglaw experience. At the moment, recruiters only bring me jobs paying about the same or less.

How do I jump to $500k territory?

Years of xp? 250k is pretty good for 1 year biglaw

I think as a non GC you can pretty much only make 500k+ in tech or finance (maybe oil/gas, not sure), so if all you care about is money then you should aim for one of those industries

Already in tech.

I can already get the jobs at the companies that pay $500k, but only at the level where they pay $250k -- which i'm already making. And right now my job is more 180 than those jobs.

I think I'll hold off and get more experience under my belt before jumping to BigTech.

Or maybe just go solo.

1. Already doing work for someone I know and trust

2. Knowing me socially and getting along well would be worth a try, but you would have to be good to keep going back.

3. Sometimes I reach out to OC based on publications in a niche area (e.g. I google "marijuana law" and read something they wrote), but that's obviously rarer.

I'm WFH right now. No set WFH schedule, but other than in person meetings I don't have to be at the office at a certain time or day. The flip side is that I check and respond to email constantly and work whenever I need to. Kind of like biglaw, except that outside of emergencies most other people arent working/emailing/expecting responses at stupid hours.

Sometimes but generally no. I think a lot of lawyers overfetishize being in "the business." Being a random product manager or engineer isn't really that exciting outside of a handful of jobs (from personal experience), and you have a limited view of the company/strategy. When you're at the top, being Johnny Ive or Steve Jobs is cool in theory but also super stressful, and good luck getting there. I'm close enough to be involved in most things and have a (small) voice in decisions, and far enough that I can easily go to another company and do something similar with different products/technology that I think is cool.
