Philip K. Dick, that is. Just finished a read-through of Ubik, one of his best-regarded works.

One of my goals for this year is to read quite a bit of classic science fiction, since I enjoy the genre but haven't delved super-deep into it. One of the authors I've generally missed so far is Philip K. Dick; Ubik is the first full novel of his I've read (though I've read several short stories).

Unsurprisingly a strange novel probably written under the influence of many, many drugs, but I quite liked it. It was genuinely funny at quite a few points (every device in the future being coin-operated makes me think of microtransaction hell) and kept me interested despite all the weirdness. I can only guess at the overall meaning of of the book but I suspect Ubik is supposed to be a metaphor for God, based on the final chapter's epigraph.

Anyway, I liked it a lot more than Vonnegut so I'll probably read some more books by him; maybe they'll help me interpret this one.

oh nice! Time Enough for Love is worth reading for the central theme (if medicine can remove aging, how do people find purpose over supernaturally long lifespans?) and kooky narrative. heinlein tends to go over the top with group sex eventually in most of his books, but his young adult novel Citizen of the Galaxy might be the most charming portrayal of the libertarian sort of ethos I've come across.

Worth reading Stranger in a Strange Land if only to revel in how weird it is. I liked Have Space Suit Will Travel, but the sense of weltschmertz you will get reading it in the Current Year is up there with the Tom Swift books or something.

/// would strongly recc Vernor Vinge & Greg Egan if you haven't read them.

Fredrick Pohl. One of my favorites. Premise is that an advanced civilization left interstellar technology behind on like asteroids and Venus. Humans are trying to figure out how to use it with a high death rate, which they do because there’s little food or jobs around.
