So in a study trying to explain why black boys are not achieving as well as similarly situated white boys (or black girls), instead of looking at the educational background of the boys themselves, we look at the backgrounds of their mothers.

Not only are we ignoring the fact that black boys don't even make it through the primary system in order toe benefit from AA (which closes the $$$ gap between black women and white women to some extent), we are pretending that looking only at the mothers education is a way to control the education variable.

So a white man MD, PhD or JD married to a college graduate white woman is in the same control group as a black college graduate mother married to a high school dropout, or to no one.
