I need something for smart people to blow off steam with.

Needs to run in under an hour, preferably 30 min. Should work with 3-5 people — you may assume 4. Needs to be light but must also have strategic depth. In particular non-interactive shit like Dominion or Race for the Galaxy is a no go. Needs to be relatively easy to pick up.

Your thoughts please?

I don't play multiplayer board games that take less than an hour, son.

I haven't played it but maybe 1775: Rebellion, a 4-player American Revolution game. Also 1812: The Invasion of Canada. I think they also have a French and Indian War game and a Vikings game by now.

In non-wargames, Eclipse CAN be played in about and hour but tbh it usually takes longer, sometimes even 3 hours.

Yeah he's gonna have a hard time with that. Even the handful of Eurogames I like are definitely taking at least an hour.

Btw my favorite Euro is El Grande.

Never played PR. Only did Power Grid once and I didn't hate it but overall I just never want to play Eurogames when there are wargames I could play instead.

Obviously Settlers of Catan would be perfect for your use case, but if you're asking this question you've probably already played it.

El Grande or 7 Wonders would be good, but I'm not sure they are interactive enough for you. Players interact with each other in those games but its not as interactive as a trade-based game like Settlers of Catan.

There's a million games "like" Puerto Rico, if Puerto Rico is sufficiently interactive for your weirdly outgoing and extroverted group of Eurogamers.

I'd consider El Grande a more interactive than Settlers. There are more means for ganging up and directly sabotaging people in the former.
