Her secretary gives me contact info for the client, who I call directly to discuss the complaint two weeks ago and how to draft the answer. I go through the whole history with the client, who was a VP or something idk, and we are talking for a while, pretty young guy.

I took a ton of notes and I'm asking him about business practices, the plaintiff, their company, everything. We set up another call a day later with the named investment advisor. He gives me the whole history basically acknowledging in several ways that the practices in the complaint are accurate but that he doesn't do that anymore and the company has since changed policy. Also the plaintiff lost money in a downturn economy (not U.S.) I email the partner detailed summary of our convo and she never responds to me.

There are zero grounds for a motion to dismiss so I draft the answer. For the non-lawyers reading this you can basically admit allegations, deny them, or say you need more info. If you know that the allegations are true though you should probably admit them. So that's how I drafted it, admitting the stuff that I confirmed they were doing, and saying not enough info for about 50% of it too. I email it to the partner a few days before its due. No response. On the day its due I file it (after emailing her again). I had a first year put another set of eyes on it before filing.

This afternoon she sent me an email in all caps "THIS CANT BE" and to call her immediately. I call her and she doesnt answer. She sends another email that says "everything...all liability...admitted...I can't believe what I am reading." Even though I SENT IT TO HER and she never responded and I drafted it exactly what the client told me (I took great notes). We still haven't talked by phone but I dont think its gonna be a great convo...

How big of an issue is this?

first off, nobody would believe that a partner would let a 2nd year associate handle this soup to nuts. that was your big mistake, not setting a realistic premise.

but then you go out of your way to explain the law to non-lawyers. another red flag.

I take initiative and had a call with the client. Thought that was standard procedure. Maybe by 'talk with the client about the answer' the partner didnt mean investigate all the allegations but thats what I did. In biglaw youre expected to take the lead

I have signed for partners before on subpoenas and motions. This is standard practice.

Half of the complaint I said we didnt have enough info to respond. Including some allegations which frankly I should have admitted based on what I knew but I was protecting the client.
