I felt that until I was rich enough to have the free time to read them, I was better off not reading books and focusing on money.
How wrong am I to think this way? I, however, post on this shitboard.
If I wanted to get back to reading, what should I start off with? I simply want to have books I can talk about in convos with people and read some of the classics. I read several classics during college, but tbf, I have forgotten all about them. That's how bad I suck at retaining info I read.

i have a working theory here: im going to give great books without prestige trolling for the sake of prestige trolling.
look, wiles proof of fermat's last theorem is "prestigious." oh, its intellectual alright--but i cant read it, you cant read it, he cant read it. the same thing applies down the line: personally, ive read plenty of shit either nobody reads or people lie about reading, but im not going to suggest books like that to someone who says he wants to read but has had other priorities irl.
im going to give compelling, readable works that are also valuable and not dumb. but yeah, no, the critique of pure reason is not going to come first.

you'll need a series of great books to get you hooked and back into your groove - ask someone you trust/like/admire to tell you a few books they couldn't put down
likely your attention span has been whittled away, so hit up some shorter reads to warm up, too
don't act like you're going to go from 0 to SPQR

never let me go - ishiguro (simple, flows well, critical details revealed with perfect timing)
out stealing horses - per patterson (father/son/transgenerational tale takes place in rural norway, one of my favorites ever)

Everyone forgets most of what they read. It is normal. I would read a well-written thriller or short engaging nonfiction book. Those should keep your attention and get you started before you tackle more ambitious books. I recommend The Force The Cartel for thrillers and Immortality and Why Does he World Exist for nonfiction.

If you want to read free ebooks w/o stealing and not settling for public domain "classics", get a library card and then download the Overdrive and Hoopla apps. Chances are that both work with your public library, and you'll have a decent selection.
I was a total non-reader until about 2 years ago when I copped a fire tablet. Now I average a book per week, albeit with pretty easy reads.
Try some Louis L'Amour novels.

no, its pretty good; most will be similar.
i dont know the "western canon" lists off the top of my head but there are a few. most of which are in agreement.
to be clear: myopic about shunning germans, totally wrong about telling people to read faraday for science imo.
