The Grateful Dead is always the credited starting point. I'd go with "American Beauty," first.

Next I'd move to the Allman Brothers "At Fillmore East"

You can start with Phish, as long as you don't pick up "Hoist" as your first move. Sort of like how the Grateful Dead are known for "Touch of Grey" but it's far from their best work. Much like the Dead, Phish's live work is a totally different animal than their studio albums.

I almost agree with this, but can't go quite that far. Phish takes more work to engage with than most other jam bands. The lyrics often seem nonsensical at first blush and the music is a little more complex. You need to know the studio work to get the live performances. I've seen Phish at least a dozen times.

It's much easier to "get" the Dead, ABB, Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, etc. when you're first getting your toes wet.

Most of them suck.

If you like electronic music, the Disco Biscuits and the New Deal are bands I still listen to regularly.

For rock/funk etc I really love Phish and continue to revisit their music pretty frequently. I can suggest some famous live performances.

For classic rock/southern rock early Allman Bros is fucking fantastic.

A lot of people love the Dead, who I never really got into very much.

My outsider conception has always been people seem to be deadheads or phish people (do they call themselves phishfood or anything?), or maybe those are just the two most cultish jam bands

They are super cultish. I think it's true that people generally identify with one or the other but enjoy both bands.

Why the sudden interest in jam bands?

I don't think either of them are good starting points. You really have to see a Dead show live to appreciate them. Until then I think it is difficult getting into their live recordings. Their vocals are always out of tune and the recording quality is usually pretty shitty.

Phish is kind of the same way, but Phish relies on tons of harmonies and they have this goofiness to them that annoys me. Having said that I can't wait to see them in L.A. this summer.

I'm trying to think of how I got into Phish. I think you are right that just jumping into a live show isn't a great idea. I had all their studio albums and then got A Live One and Hampton Comes Alive. I guess if you are familiar with the structure of the songs you can appreciate the jams a little more.

I like the goofiness and crowd participation kind of stuff.

I seriously think I like them better than both Phish and the Dead at this point which is saying a lot. And I love that my black fiance is just as into them.

The other night I got home and told her I was listening to this 57 minute long jam by them called "Old Town Jam".

I was telling her that it starts getting insane at like the 25 minute mark and was going to fast forward to it when she goes, "I want to hear the whole thing, start it from the beginning."

I used to trade tapes back in the 90s when the internet was first becoming a thing. I think you can jump into their live shows but you have to really commit to it. It's easier now that everything can be downloaded online (I remember sending blank cassette tapes and getting live shows back, or trading copies of the concert recordings). There's a lot of nuance to them that takes a while to appreciate, and their catalog is massive.

There's something to be said for a band that can do a 13-show MSG residency without a single repeated song.

Get a free 30-day trial to nugs.net

They have all the jam bands there and all of their most recent shows going back years.

I'm about halfway through my free trial and I'm definitely subscribing afterwards. It is all I've been listening to at work and when I'm driving.

My black fiance and I are really into Spafford now. We've been listening to their shows for the last two weeks.

I'm listening to Aqueous right now, some show they did earlier in the month.

Listening to this band called "Beatbox" right now on nugs.

Really cool so far. This is from wikipedia:

"Since their first tours the band hasn't used set lists, instead changing their set's direction based on the crowd's energy.[2] According to the band in 2008, "we want to build an arsenal so that when we come out to rock a party, at anytime of the day, we can still connect with people."[9] The band typically performs with Randolph in a top hat, and Godchaux with a pink boa and furry hat.[16] Though only the two founding members remain constant, at live performances the band does occasionally have guest musicians join them on sets.[17]"
