depends on climate.

but yeah. wood frame and connectors with a relatively constant wire producing sound.

If humidity changes, then so does the tensile strength of the connectors to resilient wires.

Strength is kind of irrelevant, but you're right that humidity and temperature are very important. The frame can absorb moisture and expand in summer, or dry out and contract in winter. Also you have CLTE to worry about.

tensile strength is constant force of the wire pulling on the wood in the environmental conditions. Wire won't give as easily as the wood.

You can warp all of it if you don't adjust the wire strength.

bitch I'm a mechanical engineer, the material isn't undergoing plastic deformation. You're thinking of the elastic modulus since it will spring back after the humidity subsides and the material shrinks again.

Wood absorbs moisture and is affected by both temperature and humidity. Temperature is the only thing to worry about with wire.

Went to a T5 engineering school myself.

... and obviously didn't study engineering. Expansion of the wood necessitates the wire stretching or failing, I already talked about CLTE in my previous comment. If you wanted bonus nachos, you could even talk about thermal expansion differentials since obviously one will have a different coefficient than the other.

If in an air conditioned and controlled environment, probably not much.

Humidity is a big concern, but if temperature and humidity is controlled, probably not needed as often.

I imagine back in the day the equipment and knowledge to do this would be beyond most people, but nowadays a measurement mic is cheap & there have got to be instructions online somewhere

I'm buying a house, and they're offering to throw in the upright piano for free. One of the keys doesn't work. Not sure about the overall condition of the thing. My wife wants to keep it because she thinks it looks pretty an d maybe our kid will play it someday (he's 2 yo now). I'm worried it'll be a pain in the ass to move (it's on the second floor)

My mom played piano in the local symphony and taught piano lessons at home. We had a Steinway. I don't think we even tuned it every 6 years. My uncle tuned it but he was an engineer who had actually restored old pianos so he knew what he was doing. All I know about pianos is they can be fixed and it's never bad to have one.

My wife insists on having ours tuned every two weeks. I have no idea why. The kids don't even play it, but she insists on having the piano tuner guy out every other Tuesday morning.
