Programming is mostly bitch work and pays a lot less, but generally the work doesn’t drive people to suicidal ideation. I suppose law could just attract people prone to suicide

I can see how that kind of pressure can grind down your psyche day to day. There’s more at stake in law. A programmer can just say “erm guess I underestimated the time commitment whoops”

it's the constant - constant - fighting that wears you down. it's always you against everyone. even people in your firm, working ostensibly on the same side as you, are trying to claw over you and use you for their own purposes. it's mentally exhausting

Who cares if you fuck up - you can just find the bug and fix the code

If you fuck up in law, you're done here

Also, constant fire drills and on call (at least at large firms)

In general, it's just higher stress because there's more "responsibility"

Those GOLDEN HANDCUFFS. I need to make a certain amount.

That said, I could likely cut back but I'm saving a lot. I used some of that to buy an investment property this year, which is generating rental income. My plan is to add another few properties over the next five years and then transition to a very part time practice.

I'm in the suburbs of a top 10 metro. I don't have an expensive lifestyle but wife + kids adds up. Either way, yes, I'd love to just spend my time managing a small real estate portfolio that I can eventually give to my kids. That's the motivating factor for all this assucking lawyer work.

Lawyers are subjected to scrutiny by friends, foes, and neutrals. And the liability persists over a relatively long period of time.

Because you are directly helping people in those positions and your clients see you as a legitimate advocate. You also have freedom as a therapist to be creative with your clients. Clients, generally speaking, like their therapists and enjoy the time they spend with them. There are no real deadlines or endless waves of work. There are no opposing parties. You have a great deal of autonomy and are not really beholden to anyone unless you work in an institutional setting. Your fellow therapists tend to be altruistic, highly empathetic people who are not repulsive to be around.

Lawyers, on the other hand, are viewed by their clients as an extremely expensive necessary evil. They are forced to pay you to navigate an obtuse system where "fairness" is secondary to procedures and regulations. At least half of your colleagues are nasty, autistic or mentally ill, and the sort of people you would actively avoid everday IRL.

CR.

And they expect that because their problem is urgent to them, it must be urgent to you. Calling you on a Friday at 8pm? "Sure," they think. Because it's "urgent" unlike the other 20 clients sending you urgent problems to fix.

Therapists say "see me every Wednesday at 2pm. If you feel like dying 911."

let me add that you never "produce" anything. Even if you do your job well, all you see is a contract, or a favorable court order, or a check. Then you wake up the next day and there's another one. When people talk about shuffling paper from one stack to another, they are being 100% honest. There's a benefit in having some sort of objective marker of accomplishment, other than depositing a paycheck every couple of weeks.

sisyphus. something like programming results in discrete developments which can be mentally-categorized as "contributions" of some sort to something beyond yourself. something additive to the "stock" of mankind. but intervening into (and often PROVOKING) other people's retarded and destructive legal disputes?
