edit: racial segregation isn't as rigid as I implied above--there are some poor white folks and rich black folks in the mix |

Date: April 21st, 2018 6:11 PM Author: umber stirring dingle berry Inside the city Edgewater is the nicest neighborhood--suburban feel only a 5-10 min from downtown and walk to the beach. Some would argue University Circle in the area of Case Western Reserve U, and there is an argument: great landscapes, musea and the orchestra etc. and entertainment options typical of a campus area--but this is an oasis in the center of the city's roughest East Side hoods.
Lakewood, a city that broke off Cleveland to escape bused-in blacks in schools, is a great town. Urban feel along main thoroughfares but well-maintained single fam homes for miles along the connecting streets. Taxes are high.
Ohio City is just across the river from downtown and it's a truly mixed bag. Lots of hipster gentrification along the eastern border (near the river) transitioning to destitution as you move west past St. Ignatius high, which is a top private school.
Cleveland Heights is east of the city. Similar to Ohio City but a separate public school system which is better than Cleveland, obviously, and similar to Shaker but geared a little bit younger and not as black. The east side (shaker and cle heights) developed in an earlier era than much of the west side; there is a gilded-age Dickensy look to the apt complexes which line the main streets.
For entertainment, downtown along the river is a good bet. The "flats" used to be a nexus of sailor debauchery, then died completely, and are now in a redevelopment boom. I live just above them in the Warehouse District, which is home to a smattering of coke-and-grind clubs, some of which will have 100% black clientele.

Other good west side burbs in order of proximity to cleveland: Rocky River (More suburban than Lakewood, lower taxes, not as walkable), Fairview Park (Similar to Rocky River but slightly more working class--homes are smaller and older) and Westlake (full on lily white mcmansion sprawl). Bay Village is north of Westlake on the lake, but I never hear of anybody from there--I think it's mostly retirees, or just people so rich they have no contact with me.
