love toyota, but don't really love the rav4. wish my cock was big enough to buy a land cruiser.

The current model Rav4 is phoned in and not worth considering. The CR-V strictly dominates the Rav4 on all metrics.

CR-V vs Outback is a much closer call. I test drove both of these cars recently.

I honestly didn't consider anything larger than the compact SUV class (which includes both the Rav4 and the CR-V) because my use case does not require anything larger. I am sadly unable to assist you with inquiries related to the mid size SUV class.

I am troubled that you continue to speak of the Toyota Rav4. My wife and I are Toyota people, so you can believe me when you say that the Rav4 as it exists in 2018 is not worth your time. The CR-V is strictly better on all metrics. USNWR agrees, ranking the Rav4 in the middle of the pack.

yeah, i honestly am only considering toyota because of the rav4 hybrid. i would also consider toyota for a highlander or a 4runner (which i wish i could buy, but probably doesn't make sense).

right now it's really a tie between the outback and the cr-v.

tie between the outback and the cr-v is exactly where I was. I test drove them both, found that the difference in storage space and passenger was very real and very obvious, and decided to go with the CR-V which leads its class in storage space AND passenger space.

why do you want a hybrid? virtue signaling? research battery production for hybrid cars...

3) Is the CRV all wheel drive like the outback? My brother has one and I didn't think it was.

CR-V is substnatially bigger than an outback breh. When the carseat was put in the back of the Outback it made me uncomfortable in the front passenger seat.

CR-V has an AWD version which is what we're getting actually

Just looked at the USNews comparison and you seem to be right. Surprising to me - I think my brother has a 2015 or 2016 CRV and its ugly as hell as did not seem all that big.

Seems the only big advantage of the Outback is the torque for towing. I am curious how each would perform (with 4WD models) in the snow.

CR-V is actually slightly smaller than the Outback bro. Look it up. 101-106 cubic feet of room in the CR-V (varies by spec) vs 104-108 for the Outback.

Now, there are certain interior packaging things that makers can do to make them feel bigger. Your carseat test may well have been pretty accurate for how those cars would work for you.

these threads confuse me because i dont get how people are so apathetic about their car choices, yet still put so much effort into choosing the right one.

there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of models of cars - you should instinctively be able to get excited about one of them. if you can't, just pick one and move on. the new car market is generally efficient and you're not going to get totally fucked, especially if youre choosing between an outback, AWD crv, rav 4 or CX5, which are all close enough that it doesnt matter what you pick.

currently considering:

1) old (2-3 year old CPO) forester or outback

2) 2019 subaru forester, limited trim

3) 2019 rav4 hybrid (not completely sure about trim level for the hybrids, they're being released in a few weeks supposedly)

New outback coming out summer 2019 which I’ve been planning on buying for years, but I just checked out the 2019 rav4 and am debating doing the hybrid now when it comes out.

Rav4 looks like it will be significantly faster than the outback unless you were to get the new turbo engine in the outback.

They both seem pretty good in snow although I know outbacks are king in that regard.

Technology looks comparable and Toyota may even have the edge.

My only hesitation is Toyota interiors can sometimes look/feel cheap.

I would do the 2019 forester if anything, it’s on the new global platform and is supposedly much quieter, stiffer, etc.

I think the engines are basically the same just direct injection.
