Also, just fyi, as long as they're within the acceptable color and clarity ranges, the only thing that matters is size (obviously) and cut -- none of that other shit matters IRL at 1x. I'd go down in size slightly and up in cut unless you're marrying a sturdy woman. |

Also, similar to the comment re: the stone above: You can't see any of this detail IRL -- stuff online is magnified 100x so you see every little swirl and detail in the setting, but no one can tell IRL. This should have been obvious to me, but I was a bit underwhelmed when I picked up the box at FedEx.
Go simple and classic. The other benefit with that is that you can get it re-set without losing a bunch on a setting if she has her heart set on something different that you don't know about.
If you think you're capable of picking something out that she's happy with, given your budget and timing, you could try to have something designed, too. |

A jeweler will get you a lower markup and will also pick the best value for you. The GIA spec sheet won’t tell you anything. You can get an eye clean diamond with worse specs that looks great. You really want to spend $100k sight unseen on bluenile?
Go to the diamond district and see for yourself.

Finally, as much as I love you making Nutella jealous, 4 carats is too big for a non gold digger engagement ring. Get a nice 2.5 carat VS1 with a D or E color. That’s noticeably big to 99% of the population, but it won’t make you a target for theft or make you look like you are running cocaine. Personally I wouldn’t go larger than 3.25 unless your fiancée is Khloe Kardashian sized.

I have a family heirloom ring passed down in the family. Diamond is probably only 1.25 carats, but due to the setting it looks much bigger than it is.

I think it was appraised at only 6K, but looks much more expensive than it is IMO. My friends thought it was worth maybe 20K+, but it's not.
Also look at estate sales if you don't have a family heirloom.
