Definitely better than Material Girl for me. Into the Groove is a tougher comparison. She had definitely learned how to sing better by that time (Like a Prayer). On the albums before True Blue her voice is shriller and less melodious.

That's probably true. I just don't find Material Girl to be a very re-listenable track compared to other Madonna songs. I think it's mainly remembered for the video and the cultural impact.

Hi rasqie,

Lyrics and premise are great but the best part about LAP is the phenomenal buildup, love it when the choir gets involved.

Into the groove doesn't have anything comparable. Material girl is a good song but too cheesy

I think she will forever be linked with MJ/Prince/Springsteen. They have all, one way or another, destroyed their legacy, perhaps Prince the least -- though he was the most minor member of the quartet.

Had they all retired from music in 1992, their work would be untouchable

on your second point, prince released "rap music" in the 90s, alienated everyone with his name change, then failed to chart in a meaningful way for twenty-five years. He did have some amazing moments, though, like the best superbowl halftime of all time. I think he did the least damage mostly be staying out of the spotlight.

MJ, ljl.... What "hit" did he have after Free Willy? He became a freakshow and a punchline. And even if you dont believe he had sex with boys, by his own admission he invited young boys to sleep in his bed overnight, so fuck him. One of those boys' fathers should have put a bullet through his nose.

"Like a Virgin" (7" Edit)

"Material Girl" (1990 version)

"Crazy for You" (remix)

"Into the Groove" (1990 version)

"Papa Don't Preach"

"Open Your Heart" (1990 version)

"Express Yourself" (1990's Shep Pettibone Remix)

i thought "rain" was underrated, as far as her big hit singles go. for whole albums, "like a prayer" was obviously one of the GOATUS pop records ever. i think it came out around the same time as depeche mode's "101," their big end-of-the-80's concert album and documentary.

Part of reason is because there not so popular so o haven’t heard them to death. Live to tell is dramatic without the corporate profit vibe of prayer. Plus it was in that cool Sean penn move with walken. La isla Bonita just puts me in a hot Spanish town, on the run from something, and finding a woman. Borderline has the fun naïveté and immaturity of Madonna that she spent most of her time trying to cover up.

This is the one for me, too. She sounds so young and actually somewhat authentically innocent. The song is simultaneously assured and plaintive. It sort of hints at what is to come for her. And maybe above all, it just *feels very quintessentially 80s to me.

It's probably not objectively as much of a pitch-perfect dance number as ITG or others, but I have always loved it.
