ljl at this flame. It's true that some very successful people are doing something they're passionate about, but there's also very "passionate" stand-up comedians making $15K a year (plus a free drink per performance). There are also some very successful people who don't give a shit about their jobs. "Do something you're PASSIONATE about" is an adult version of Santa Claus-- it's just a nice story about getting rewarded for virtue, but the presents you receive aren't actually controlled by some fat guy performing surveillance operations jfc.

Sure, but a job I'd love isn't available. I mean, in theory if I could get $92K streaming video games then I would gladly do that instead of being a lawfag. But there are very few streamers who make any money at all, let alone close to six figures. There are probably fewer than a million people in the world who can claim that they truly love their job. Banking on becoming one of them because a few high profile people are workaholics who really do love their job is crazy talk, no different than buying lottery tickets because you read about somebody who bought a lottery ticket and won.

i agree you should do what you love, but few people can monetize what they love, and even fewer can monetize what they love at a rate that suits their desired standard of living

to the extent that there's a gap between how much you can make doing what you love and how much you feel you need to earn to feel fulfilled in life, you can close it by (a) reexamining your values and seeing if you can't further cut costs and expenses down to the essentials and/or (b) choosing a career with the best effort-to-earnings ratio (i.e., the optimal balance between what you're good at and what pays well).

loving your job can make you better at it if it makes you more engaged and results in better work product, but you don't need to love something to be efficient / effective at it.

the point of all this is to optimize for free time and earnings, so that you can dedicate as much of your free time as possible to doing what you love without falling below your minimum standard of living
