Flexible work. Lots of firms let you do whatever from home as long as it gets done. Can roll in at a 11, out at 4 on slow days. Senior assocs can delegate a ton of the grunt work. Insanely high salary. Good job flexibility - there's firms lining up to hire you even if you get canned. Great benefits. Transactional is chill and often not too contentious.

Compare this to in-house - sitting in an open plan office, making half as much, some MD riding you every second of your 9-7 day, still have a blackberry, still working on deals. JFC.

There is shitty in-house and there is cushy in-house. Not sure if the same can be said for Biglaw. If you're there 9-7 it's prbly because you spent 3 hours shooting the shit with others.

In either case if you're not (1) GC or (2) Business generating or (3) absolutely MISSION FUCKING CRITICAL AGC or DGC in a HUGE organization your just sitti around waiting to be cannon fodder in the next round of recession layoffs oh and you didn't get that much stock cuz youre a low level lawyer and the stock is worthless because it's a recession.

Don't understand what your gripe is. Everyone going in-house understands the risk. Biglaw presents similar ones as well. What you're likely referring to (I imagine) are contract negotiator level in-house positions. Your statement holds true for biglaw I guess. No one goes in-house to make money, or, at least, I've yet to meet anyone that has. Ppl generally go for a better work life balance and reasonable pay.

You are far more likely to be canned on a whim in biglaw. In house job security is far superior to big law job security.

That might be true for the bottom 25% of performers but definitely not the middle 50%.

I think you underestimate how decimated in house legal staffs become in sharp downturns. It's nastier on a percentage basis than biglaw. 40 down to 4.

The best part of megacorp inhouse is negotiating with suppliers because your job is basically to be as unfair and dickish to them as possible. I think my main goal for the rest of my career is to spend as much of my time as possible working for businesses in negotiations where they have all the leverage in every negotiation.

They should make this voicemail a huge portion of your bar exam score. They should add a section where you have to recite it from memory and fail the whole test if you miss more than 5 words. Licensed attorneys should be subject to spot checks where they are asked by another member of the bar to recite it on demand and if they fail to recite it properly they can be disbarred. Also, I should have found this dude and begged him to hire me at the time.

2200 is 44 billable hours per week, which really means 50 hours in the office ever week. That's not bad by NYC standards, but it means 9:30-7:30 five days a week and probably 5-10 weekends a year ruined with work.

I'd wager there isn't a single lawyer in the V25 who's joined within the last 10 years who would be allowed to stay for 10 years if they bill <2k per year outside of the following edge cases: 1) they have dirt on / improper under the eyes of God relations with someone on the global committee; 2) they're a walking discrimination / adverse firing suit if they're let go; 3) they're in a niche area of practice where the hours culture has escaped the general rising tide (e.g., SALT controversy); 4) they're only there because of business facilitation (dad is the GC of Exxon); 5) they have a special niche skill (government contracting wizard with portability over into false claims act analysis for obscure contracting methodologies). This probably describes 5% of the associate workforce. For the other 95%, hours drive the equation to a degree that is jaw-dropping to idealistic outsiders. Also, the Kevron Drive has reached stage four of engineering test phase and we're preparing for a demonstration sometime in June, please let me know if you'd like to attend.

sometimes but it depends on things that are outside of your control like what the market trend is for your practice area at the time and how desperate the (usually lower vault) firm is to staff up with laterals. I've seen the scenario you describe where a lawyer has bobbed and weaved from firm to firm successfully but I've also seen people who get fucked because their resume screams "I can't stay in a single place for more then 1-2 years"; hiring partners / committees are wise to this, especially these days--it's fairly easy to spot someone who is just milking a career path for a few more years of benefits / savings before moving to borneo to open a tattoo body art stand

You don’t know what you’re taking about. At my V5 the AVERAGE billables, excluding pro bono are 1650 to 1750. With pro bono they are about 1900. It’s only the V15 (maybe V10) - V100 where you really have to grind out 2000+ consistently.

Brother, I think I do know what I'm talking about and we're really not saying anything differently. I don't doubt that some V10s have that as an average hours basis. It doesn't affect the point I'm making, particularly when you think about the volume shape of the cohort of lawyers (pyramidal base); there are lots of young lawyers who come in and try to survive billing <2k hours. I'm telling you they don't generally last these days for a combination of reasons including both firm selection and self selection

Ok, maybe it’s different at the top handful of firms. I did consider going to a lower V100 firm recently (for a move that would have involved a promotion) and I was surprised by how hours-focused they were compared to my current firm. My firm just charges pornographically-obscene rates so we don’t really have to bill that many hours to turn a good profit.

But you do have to bill these hours to support the PPP of a v5, which even with high rates relies on leverage and hours. Hours are the unit of production of the law firm. Each associate, special counsel and non-equity partner costs salary + bonus + $300k. Add up the back office at $350k/Head. Pull your top line revenue from AmLaw. Pull your PPP. Take junior associate hours at 1800/per based on a bucket of juniors at leverage and $600/hour, counsel and non-equity at 1800/per and $1000/hour and solve for hours of the buckett of senior associates at leverage and $950/hour. The math will show seniors getting CRUSHED. The average number rolled out by firms will include ALL of the partial year firings, hiring and maternity and paternity leave. You MUST bill 2400/year to last ten years.

My only point is that it's wrong to assume top tier base and bonus and graduating at 25 with $0 debt. the opportunity cost of making the money requires a few years to break even. by the break-even point, most biglawyers are looking to leave.

Hey, interesting idea you have here. I think we need to talk through things in more detail though. Can you please set up a call with the bort for Saturday at 8 a.m. and then I'll want a draft memorializing the strategy--bullets are fine, but make sure they're tight--by Sunday AM since the board presentation is Monday. Also, I need you to fly out to Quebec sometime next week to support something--I'll let you know the details sometime this week or else over the weekend, but if you haven't heard from me by Monday definitely reach back out

Thanks

“Flexible work. Lots of firms let you do whatever from home as long as it gets done.” You WILL be working from home (or the airport, train, poolside at your vacation resort, your mother’s dining room table prior to Thanksgiving dinner) in addition to all time spent in the office, since there is no distinction between work and leisure time.

“Can roll in at a 11, out at 4 on slow days”: Yes, after three straight weeks of crushing days, you’ll have a day or two with nothing to do, so you can head in or out early by a few hours, with the dreaded awareness that this period of relative calm can be blown up at any moment.

“Senior assocs can delegate a ton of the grunt work.” Yes, at a certain point you can delegate legal research and answering formulaic interrogatories, while still retaining ultimate responsibility for the delegated work being right (you’ll be as fucked as the junior if some case-busting precedent finds its way into your brief), and then you have some delightful senior associates responsibilities added to your plate, like dealing directly with intransigent clients (direct client contact!) and a plethora of business development “grunt work” (partner tasks you with getting together extensive RFP for case hitting the docket in the morning, for presentation to potential client that evening)

“Good job flexibility -there's firms lining up to hire you even if you get canned.” No. Highly dependent on market and, at some point where it is clear you are non-partner material in the big law world (i.e. vast majority of people) the most common path if staying in the firm world is going to a midlaw or boutique firm that presents much of the samw bullshit with pay comparable to inhouse roles you potentially could have earlier transitioned to earlier.

“Great benefits.” Yes, like UNLIMITED vacation! (Of course, Billable hours expectations still apply).

“ Transactional is chill and often not too contentious.” Hahahhahahhahahhahhahah
