This is one of the most competitive fields for females. Ratios at most schools are 3 or 4 women to 1 man.
There are limited schools. Only about 25 or so in the country. Is there one in your state? If not, have fun moving and competing for 20-40 slots with all other nonresidents.
4 years of debt + however long to specialize
Did you major in a physical science? If not, expect to do at least 1-2 more years of grueling science classes to catch up.
What is the starting salary? Probably not as much as you think. What about demand? |

starting salary is prob only 60-70K
job satisfaction is very high though
i am a pretty good test taker, so i think i can hack the prereqs, although i am bit rusty with school now
worst part would be the debt |

Is your husband willing to move to flyover? Will you move before you apply to establish residency or wait until you get in? What if you don't get accepted?

You can be a good test taker, but the prerequisites are WORK. Biology, chemistry (inorganic AND organic), physics, biochemistry, etc. They all have labs and require much more than just tests.
The debt is much higher than you think. |

Most states require certification to be a vet tech. This is not something you need to commit time and money to just to hang out with animals. A vet is not a high paying job. They make minimally more than vet techs. So if you are going to do it, make sure you are really passionate about it. It isn't the kind of job you do for the money. The only ones who make a lot are the people who own their own vet practice, and start up costs for a new practice is in the 7 figures. The only jobs like that are at zoos and people generally never leave those jobs. My wife almost went to vet school before she became a lawyer so we researched this a lot. Also, vet tech is even worse. You are treated like garbage by the vets and make 20-35/hr with little appreciation. Client's also think you're dumb because you're not a vet.
My cousin loves animals, but she hates that she is a replaceable employee of a big vet practice and is basically some rich non-vet's bitch working there. You don't have to be a vet to own a vet practice, so a lot are owned by corporations. |
