I've probably released over a hundred 60+ pounders even. But, the thing is I don't know if it really helps. I believe the morbidity rate is much much higher than they let on. If you fight a king salmon for an hour, even if it survives the fight after being released, why would you think that it has the energy to spawn a new generation of large salmon?
That said, every king caught would die in the next few months anyway.
Kudos to those people releasing large fish, but I have no problem with people killing big kings either. I would never shame them for catching a trophy fish.

I've heard from knowledgeable folks that coho caught in tidewater have a really high morbidity rate.
