not sure how good a .32 batting average is and how that relates to .619 slugging etc. educate me.

this is going to be a huge mess - since Ohtani does not play every single day his batting average will be based on a much smaller sample size than other players. so if his batting average continues to be high, it will be said that this is unfair.

wOBA is basically about how often you get on base and how helpful that is (i.e., better to be on third than first) and it's scaled so you can compare from player to player and park to park.

Runs created is the same thing but focusing on how many runs you cause, the two are intertwined obviously, but you would want your leadoff to have the higher wOBA and your cleanup guy the higher RC. A higher RC means you hit better in run creation scenarios compared to on base percentage, which just measures where you get to with your hits.

well there are 30 MLB teams

each has 25 players on the roster

Of those, about half are batters

So there are ~360 batters in the league.

If Ohtani is the 12th or 13th best according to advanced statistics created by math dorks, then 12th or 13th out of 360 is pretty good considering he is ALSO A TOP PITCHER

Basically Ohtani is doing things unheard of since the 1910's by being both an above average batter and a very above average pitcher

there was this guy in the 1910's named Babe Ruth who was good at both pitching and hitting. But after 1918 he pretty much gave up pitching to focus on his batting. He was one of the best pitchers of his time, and then became indisputably the best hitter of his time, but wasn't really doing that simultaneously.

Ohtani is trying to do both at once.

The last guy to be widely renown for being both good at hitting AND good at batting was this guy from the 2000's named Dontrelle Willis, aka THE D TRAIN

In his best offensive season, Dontrelle Willis hit .286 with a slugging percentage of .508. However, Dontrelle was inconsistent as a pitcher. The year he hit .286, he had an ERA over 5 which is very unprestigious, meaning he was a bad pitcher that year.

Also, Dontrelle Willis only hit every 5 days as the number 9 hitter on days when he pitched. Ohtani hits 2 out of every 5 days and hits higher up in the lineup.

He signed an entry level contract with a small 7 figure signing bonus. The team decides what he is paid the first three years, then he is arbitration eligible. If he’s a stud, he can make 8 figures in arbitration, but prob not to his 5th or 6th year. After than he is a free agent.
