Not necessarily. More introverted types who are well-balanced don't give a fuck if their father is around or not. If your kids are neurotic whiney faggots, they may need you around a lot.

The thing people don't realize is that the more you work the worse every hour is because you have a certain number of hours in your week that have to go to stuff like sleeping, eating, shitting, bathing, commuting, dealing with bills/home stuff, etc. Generously, if you think of your 50 hours a week in terms of "free time" you should figure that you'll be home by 7pm and be able to generally relax until 11pm, and on weekends you'll get everything except maybe 4-5 hours. Now subtract 20 hours from that. If you take 2 hours per day during the week you still need to find another 10 hours over the weekend (in addition to the 4-5 hours you're already doing). In other words, you have killed the majority of your free time and now have almost none left. I'm not even factoring in shit like exercising, children, spouse time, etc.

Answer depends on how much longer you want to work and whether you want to be a GC one day. Also, relatedly, depends on how old your kids are. If your goal is to retire early then v30. If you expect to work for 10+ years and potentially either get promoted or have another job after the deputy GC job then probably the DGC job unless it’s at a shit company that won’t help your resume. The other factor is how much of a book you have at the v30 and what practice area, i.e. what are the prospects to grow the 900k to a lot more if you do plan to work for a while longer (7+ more years).

Depends. E.g. head of litigation has a ton of job security at the start of a downturn. Probably also safe is the lead lawyer over ops/procurement who will have to help paper all the cost cutting measures. But if you’re the DGC who supports the head of sales and the head of sales is fired you are fucked. If you support something fluffy like CMO or are chief ethics officer, also fucked.

I know a handful of non equity in those types of firms but none approaching that sort of comp. K&E pays better than most and somebody I know there makes like $650k.

Coincidentally, got contacted by a recruiter today for a senior in house position at blackstone in their hedge fund division. Not sure what kind of place you’re talking but if PE, I assume a place that’d pay $550k is blackstone or equivalent. But btwn $550k at blackstone or $900k, id prob take $900. Blackstone is more than 50 hours a week though.

Also, I think it’s a bit different standard for men and women. I wouldn’t advise a woman to take the higher paying job.

you are notionally equity at these places even if your comp is fixed for the first 2-3 years, and you would have pretty good job security - you don't see partners at places like this leaving very often unless it's to go to K&E for a big payday. If you take the v30 partnership job you should expect your comp to rise to some extent over the next 5 years, even if you stay a service partner, and you probably have better job security as a partner at firms like this than you have as a deputy GC anywhere.

That said given your wife's income it seems like a no-brainer to take the DGC job.

Well I know nothing about comp at those firms, so it that’s the case, then negotiate for a higher in house comp. at a senior level, you’re not expected to take a 40% paycut to go in-house. If they can pay $550k, they can pay $700k.

Thread is unclear if you’re at the firm already though or you have an offer at a v30 v in house.

At K&E non-equity billing 2800 hours. Holding both offers and need to make a decision quickly. Very nervous about wrong move closing out long term millions. This thread was flame by the way.

i haven't heard of any non-equity partners making around $1 million in biglaw - usually the biglaw firms that have these tiers treat non-equity like shit.

That said there are several non-equity partners at my firm who make over $1 million, but equity here doesn't mean much, and some people would prefer to stack cash rather than have to buy in, if all it means is trading a vote for personal liability.

Deputy GC duh. When the partnership’s taxes are accounted for you probably earn more as the DGC.

Oh I missed that. Still go DGC because you have zero job security as a non-equity partner and that’s a Grade A “BITCH” job anyways. The DGC job is top 0.0000001% of in-house jobs.

Wouldn't a lot of V30 firms not even pay 900k for that?

How much business would you be required to generate in the non-equity role?

What size is the company? F200/etc.

F100 all the way.

The arrangement at the V30 is likely temporary based on how much biz they have. I don’t think any firm in the word is paying a glorified senior associate 900k for years and years on end.

not V-50 biglaw but there are plenty of firms where originating millions in business (making over $1 million) are not equity partners.

Making over $1 million while originating $0 of business?

no that's basically impossible.

But you can originate several million in business, be compensated for it, and still be non-equity if you don't care to vote or be personally liable for finances of the firm.

How dumb are you? None of the upside if you work a ton/bring in tons of business since you are paid on salary and all of the risk since if you get fired you have no actual clients to take with you.

after taxes, the extra $350K won't turn out to be very much. Especially considering the likely difference in hours worked.
