As an adult it's tough to have it be your one break from work for 4-6 months. It's expensive yet attracts proles from all over, the lines are ridiculous and it's incredibly crowded depending upon when you go, there's a really off-putting cult/scene aspect to it, and it's very vanilla: nothing will be that great or that awful about it.

I'd prefer a regular vacation with a day or two at a beach and a day or two at an amusement park v. being locked in to Disney at $1-1.5k/day.

We went in the spring but on weekdays and it was pretty close to being hell -- you couldn't even move in the World Showcase; lines for stuff that was fine but whatever (e.g., Seven Dwarfs Mine Train) were TWO HOURS. My daughter loves going on rides, but we can do that closer to home with a lot shorter lines.

I'd go back, but convincing my wife to go again will be a major hurdle.

Oof I don't remember it being anywhere near that bad when I went as a kid, but that was 25 years ago

Sounds like they should raise their prices. Seriously

isn't there a fastpass or something that costs extra but gets you in front of the line?

Yes, but you can only hold 3 fastpasses per day initially and they have to be at the same park. Once you've used them, you can get one more at a time. If you stay at a WDW hotel, you get to choose your fastpasses 60 days in advance, if you don't, it's 30 days in advance. Things fill up pretty quickly -- people way overplan for Disney trips. If you plan way ahead, you could maybe get one for 9:30-10:30 at one ride, 10:45-11:45 at another, and 12:30-1:30 at another. Once you've checked in for the 12:30 once, you can get one more fastpass at a time if they're available (and on a busy day, even a weekday in spring, no passes for anything that actually had a significant line would be available until say 7 or 8 p.m. (if at all)). Keep in mind that you've probably made dinner reservations in advance (can do this 180 days in advance, and plenty of people actually do this), so need to plan around that, too.

Same. I like to have agendas for vacations -- e.g., on day 1 doing X and eating at Y or Z -- so that you don't waste the morning with everyone staring at phone trying to plan the day, but WDW is another level.

Yes, I think so, at least when we went (unfortunately spring). There are all those blogs, books, message boards, etc. that teach suburban moms to plan ahead.

There are calendars that predict how busy it will be on a 1-10 scale. I think we were there for days that were 7 and 8. Maybe different if it's not as busy.

You also have to stay on-site to get the 30-day jump on fastpasses. Swan and Dolphin count and are reasonably priced.

I went to DW a few weeks ago. I despise going, but my daughter had sick a fun time that it was hard to not enjoy myself. It’s great for kids.

Adults who go without kids are the most bizarre people on earth.

I have been there a few times (no kidmo, went because I had a few days extra during work conferences)

I just don't get it. I mean, I get it in the sense that it is a safe and relatively controlled environment to take a family on vacation. But the lines, the crowds, the incredibly high prices are horrible, and the attractions are literally crap. Like, I don't understand how kids today would even care given all the alternative entertainment they have available. I just don't understand it.

How did HHI get on this list? Brother, you don’t like golf, beaches, fishing, etc.?
