Amex: made a single claim for a $100 electronic device. I fill out a simple form with date of purchase, purchase amount, and a description of the problem.

Chase: faced with a $150 claim, turfs me over to a third-party claims processor, who requires original receipt, a copy of the credit card statement, description of the problem, manufacturer warranty statement. Now they are asking me to take the monitor to an "authorized repair facility" to get an estimate for repair.

I got rid of Amex because I felt bad about them taking a bigger cut of purchases, esp at small businesses and restaurants.

But I would gladly pay a higher annual fee to avoid this nonsense. I'm going back.

i tried to use the extended warranty benefit on an iPhone I dropped 3 months after Apple care ended. I sent them the credit card statement, the serial #, and only asked for the 275 that Apple charges to repair it. they won't do anything for me until I send them the paper receipt of the original iPhone purchase at a t-mobile store.

the penny pinching and 7 layers of proof they require are infuriating because i never abuse this shit, and i'm paying them an annual fee for the privilege of letting them cornhole me.

Easiest thing in the world is get a 2% cashback, periodically collect your cashback.

Citi is super easy to do chargebacks with, too. A different cc fucked me out of getting my money back from a $50 cab ride from a gypsy cab. Wish I had citi then.

I tried to use the CSR car rental coverage once and they sent me to a third party with a mountain of paperwork and weird deadlines -- ended up skipping it because it wasn't worth the hassle. Not sure what it's like for Amex, but this was nearly worthless if your time is worth anything.

Do free Amex cards have the same purchase protection as the ones with annual fees? I used to have Amex gold. Thinking about Everyday card.

The CSR is my first "big boy" credit card, I've only had no fee cards from my bank before this. It's so much fancier than anything I've ever had before, it's like I'm 10 years old again and staying in a Marriott for the first time after only knowing roadside motels. Amex seems like an entirely different universe from the one that I inhabit.

i think the fees and benefits are comparable to amex platinum. amex seems to be better at covering your back when something goes wrong. it seems like CSR is tossing out some benefits.

I'm really just using the CSR's 50,000 point bonus to fund my next vacation. I'll probably explore Amex products to fund my next vacation after that.
