Why does no one talk about the obesity epidemic anymore?

Spend two days in any other first world country and you will immediately be like "WTF happened to America?" Sure, there are chunky people in Europe. But the sheer number of massive landwhales in the U.S. is something that I have never seen anywhere else.
I remember when people used to be normal sized in the US. Even the early 2000s, when 30% of the population was obese, seems quaint and innocent compared to now. I was born in the mid-80s. Maybe kids born later don't even know what I'm talking about.
The "obesity epidemic" used to be something that people talked about. Now all you hear is how Starbucks is the second coming and you're an anti-science bigot if you're against GMOs because they're "proven safe."
But it's beyond obvious that something is really screwed up about our environment in the U.S. There are many possible factors. Lack of physical activity because of TTT work culture. Lack of public transit. Antibiotics in meat and dairy messing up gut flora. Roundup messing up gut flora. Cultural attitudes that condone slovenliness and overconsumption. My guess is that the phenomenon is the result of several factors. It's hard to think that it's individuals' fault because it's so pronounced compared to any other comparable countries. But why is no one talking about it?

1) people do talk about it
2) your analysis is pretty bad and lmao at the GMO fearmongering

This is dumb thinking. You can look at statistics. America isn't that much fatter than other countries.
You are just comparing what ever podunk suburb you live in with the nice parts of Paris. If you walk around the Upper West Side or Orange County people aren't fat either.

Charles, you’re a great poster but I think this analysis is wrongheaded.
As someone who’s looked into evidence-based approaches to weight loss, you should know that exercise plays a minor role at best. Perhaps a larger cultural shift towards more sedentary jobs and lifestyles could be implicated, but that’s not an individual moral failing. Plenty of skinny people never exercise.
More broadly it is evident that most people DO care about losing weight and maintaining a healthy appearance. Witness the massive amount of money spent on weight loss products and diet pills and so on. I realize you probably have weirdo “health at any size” activists in mind when you wrote that, but they are distinctly in the minority. Most people understand at a visceral level that fewer people will want to fuck then if they’re fat.
Further, I don’t think we “tolerate” obesity in the youth so much as we just don’t know how to deal with it. Sure, parents need to stop that shit early, but there are systemic factors working against them and it’s hard for working class people to micromanage their children’s lives. To the extent we can, we ARE taking action (see for instance the recent mandatory calorie labels in restaurants).
I think this is a hard problem and runs much deeper than “moral” failings.

Exercise plays a minor role in keeping off weight, but that's not what I was referring to. It's simply true that, in general, it's impossible to be seriously "in shape" while being obese. Basically, a person who has let themself become obese has cut themself off from a key component of being a robust, well-rounded person.
You're right that many ppl do care about losing weight, but a ton don't, and our idea of what level of fat is "acceptable" also keeps rising. Fat acceptance activists are rare, but there are far more people who passively accept fatness as their default state. I meet them all the time.
Calories in restaurants are good, but frankly I think we could go further. I think it was disgraceful that the right generally opposed Michelle Obama's pro-healthy kids stuff, and if anything they should be more enthusiastic in promoting fitness. Fuck it, let fats be charged more for plane tickets. Give small college scholarships to people who can pass some military readiness fitness test. Tax obesity itself if you want. There's lots of shit we could do. But letting America gradually become a hellscape of fat monsters is abominable.

Horseshit.
People didn't change. The environment changed.
The individualistic explanations are garbage.

no, this is extremely retarded and wrong
the reason most people are fat is because there are other people who make billions and billions of dollars making people fat and face virtually no constraints or consequences for doing so
i realize your whole shtick is reactionary nonsense but thinking that everyone just decided "eh, let's get fat" around 1983 is profoundly stupid

They would need to be draconian, much like cigarette taxes.
Since 1960, food prices have dropped from about 17.5% of income to about 10% of income. We'd need to raise prices about 75% just to get back to that point. And the environmental factors are stronger now, so we might have to raise prices even more. That bag of Doritos is now $12.
Or we could hope for medical, pharmaceutical, and genetic breakthroughs.

And they respond better to direct, immediate, easily understood incentives. Price tags are all of those things.
Taxing obesity would require people to engage in additional long term planning and self-control, which they are already struggling with.
You might call that a feature, but it would produce inferior weight loss outcomes.

From a pbm perspective, cant fix it. We can do a quantity limit on what we can prescribe. We cant smack a fucking doughnut out of your hand. Have to cover the symtoms, not the cause at this point.
fuck you if you post a couple of photos of your fat frame on instagram and we dont have to pretend you are now a model.
We have cracked down opioids. Fats are gonna fat

Number one contributor is air conditioning. When it's 90, you literally do not want to eat. When it's 65, you can put down a pizza.
Number two contributor is abundant, cheap food. People are constantly eating huge meals and downing huge drinks loaded with calories.
