World leaders & presidents, obviously

The tech titans of today will go down as the Fords and Rockafellers of a century ago. Especially Bill Gates

I expect most celeberities and athletes to become forgotten over time as different sports rise and fall in popularity, cultural changes, new people arriving on the scene

I don't know, people today remember Ford because they think he invented the car, and Ford cars still exist today. Carnegie gets remembered because of his university, libraries and museums: tangible things. Also he was an eccentric, kooky character with memorable quotes and stuff.

Rockefeller somehow became a synonym for "rich guy", and there was a whole multigenerational family of them, in business, politics, etc. "The Rockefellers".

I just don't think if Bill Gates will be as easily remembered. MSFT and the Gates Foundation probably won't exist in 200 years. I doubt his kids will do anything memorable. Maybe if he had three sons and pushed them all into being businessmen/politicians it would be different. I mean, we're talking about 200 years from now.

Sure, they'll be remembered in history books the same way some of the railroad and oil barons are remembered now. But average people will not know their names the way we know Ford/Edison/etc.

They're just not personally interesting enough and their names aren't on anything big.

From 1990 to now? Who will be known in 200 years?

Studious people will know about Bill Clinton having a sex scandal. ("Wasnt he the president with the oral sex?")

People will know there were decades of wars with Muslims over oil

People will know about 9/11

People will know about the first black Potus. His funny name helps.

And -- here's my hot-take -- Caitlyn Jenner will be famous as an example of a Salem-like mass hysteria that defines an entire era

Frankly i think Bill Clinton’s sex adventures will be forgotten. Throughout history many rulers had crazy, promiscuous sex lives and cultural changes may shift away from the puritan norms we are used to.

Definitely agree about 9/11 (modern day pearl harbor) and the ongoing middle eastern wars of the last few decades. Within America at least (if it still exists), I expect Bin Laden and maybe Saddam Hussein to be remembered

That is the least likely to be remembered, but a lot of people remember trials like the Lindbergh kidnapping and it has a race angle that makes it likely to be discussed in history classes as an example of racial tension in the U.S.

Killing Bin Laden will only be remembered as a small part of 9-11 and its aftermath. Really he wasn't much of a factor once he went into hiding. It was just a matter of time before someone killed him. OJ Trial? Nope -- not in 200 years. Should really only be remembered as Hollywood trivia 20 years from now. Like the Fatty Arbuckle trial (remember that?)

The racial element could make the OJ trial more memorable - people will think it illustrates the racial tension in the U.S.

Killing Bin Laden is a 180 story - Navy Seals sneaking into Pakistan on helicopters and assassinating him was pretty cool - but you are probably right.

With OJ, I agree about the racial element, but I think historians will see the Rodney King riots as more important in that respect.

That was before mass culture, TV and the Internet. Plenty of people have heard of Jim Thorpe, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

Yeah but that was within the last 100 years. Give it another 100 and those fags will be forgotten. The more mass culture there is the easier it is for these frauds to be forgotten, replaced, and fade away. Almost no figure other than major historical figures of today will be remembered in 200 years...almost certainly no music, entertainment, or sporttt frauds.

I agree, but some of the first figures will likely be remembered. People will remember Babe Ruth and Charlie Chaplin still.

The most popular sports in the US 100 years ago were horse racing, baseball, and boxing. 200 years from now these sports could be totally dead (along with TV and movies) and everyone is obsessed with some insane versions of esports and VR narratives.

yeah exactly

popular sports are a function of mass culture

It wasn’t until railroads were well established — first in England — that modern sports emerged because school teams could now travel, and so needed common rules. Before about 1860, games were extremely idiosyncratic from place to place.

Yes. Sir Barton won the first triple crown back in 1919 and people still talk about him all the time! But that's only 100 years ago.

yeah im jk. youre right that no movie stars, musicians or athletes will be remembered. the closest will be michael jordan, who will have a babe ruth like run of 150 years or so of fame.

basketball and certainly football will not even be played in 200 years.

it will be presidents and world leaders and tech innovators. from the world of pop culture, the person will have to have significance insofar as he represents a cultural shift that we may be mostly oblivious to. That's why I nominate Caitlyn Jenner.

Most of the major sports today will be dead. The only way football will be saved if there are major (unlikely) medical advances that can reverse brain damage.

Microsoft has had 90% market share of OS and office products for 25 years.

Jobs made a better phone that had at best like a 40% market share that is rapidly dropping.

None of this really matters - Jobs was a more personally interesting character, and Windows was just a bad copy of the Mac. I don't think either one will be remembered much 200 years from now though.
