girl i'm dating is a college prof and says at least 1/3 of her students have no business being in college. i believe it having read some of the student papers she's shared with me. her school recently created a special program for autistic kids so they can get more $$$. apparently, some of these kids are borderline retarded and cause huge disruptions in the classroom. seems so unethical to take their money, knowing that even if they graduate they'll never get a job. meanwhile, their TTT business school is virtually all full tuition chinese imports who barely speak english. doesn't seem like a good long term model. higher ed is such a joke.

How about starting with cutting it and then using it to stop borrowing money and pay off the national debt and then use whatever is left over for education and infrastructure (assuming we really need to spend more on education, which I'm not sure we do)?

There are not enough jobs and the current employers have no business requiring a degree in anything. They also play games with requiring "experience" too... and feeding them a rich stream of STEM grads will do nothing about it. That said it is unconscionable that students are even being made to pay for their own educations. Garbage policy.

Also, if they decide to just not work or do low paying stupid non-profit shit, then why is society at large stuck with all of the bill?

They will pay less in taxes when you take their money away and give it to the school. Let them keep it. If they make lots of money, great, then they pay more into the system without getting beat up for tuition payments, too. If their income is low then they're not benefiting anyway, and they will pay taxes on what they do earn.

They will not because the tax deduction for student loans drops off at a very low salary. So they will pay both taxes and student loans. It is their choice not to make it.

People should 100% be beat up for tuition payments. They chose to incur those costs and it is their fault.

Also, if people don't pay then there's no cost-benefit analysis at the individual level. In other words, right now we benefit from the fact that people consider whether the salary increase is worth the cost of attendance. That works to keep people from going to graduate school for art, music and other idiotic endeavors, and also limits admission to really crappy MBA and JD programs. If there's even a marginal benefit to these programs and the cost is 0, then attendance will also skyrocket.

There's no cost-benefit analysis *now* with student loans, and causing economic hardship on someone pulling in a modest income, for example, isn't benefiting them or the school. Just let them keep their money and invest it or something, not have to give it to the school.

"There's no cost-benefit analysis *now* with student loans"

I disagree and a number of TTTs have failed due to low enrollment. That is the system working. The key is to increase the factors that lead to this, not decrease them. The problem with your approach is that it removes all responsibility from the people deciding to attend. That is retarded. The people who should overwhelmingly be on the hook are a) the student and b) the school. Society as a whole should bear little risk to whether or not you or I attend or not.

"and causing economic hardship on someone pulling in a modest income, for example, isn't benefiting them or the school"

Sure it is. It a) recoups some of the money, and b) serves as a warning to others not to make bad choices. This is why I completely oppose your approach.

"Just let them keep their money and invest it or something, not have to give it to the school."

No. Make them pay their debts and the costs they incurred. If they didn't like it they shouldn't have incurred it.

Employers and the employed are the ones who benefit from education and should be the ones paying taxes to support that system. Making someone destitute by forcing them to pay off the school is going to prevent them from ever contributing to society.

That seems wrong, particularly since you're on a board full of people that paid back their student debt and are doing well (including myself and my wife). Make good choices and pay your debt.

Employers are paying the salaries of the people that incurred the debt which allows them to pay that back. Seems to be working fine.

The only people not paying their fair share are the schools, which need to be liable for their failures.

Tuition and debts were so high because the boomer generation, as taxpayers and employers, were not forced to pay for the education system of their children. But those boomers did get free or cheap educations and did very well financially from that. What would they care if tuition skyrocketed now that they don't have to pay? Worse, students just use loans and go into default, so they don't pay them back but still suffer economically from it.

no but we should at least stop the "everyone should go to college" obama-era forcememe and stop looking down on people who choose to pursue trades instead of taking on student debt.

No, but there should definitely be more short track programs for MDs (and maybe even JDs) like they have in Europe.

Maybe give kids 1 year to be sure and then open up an MD specific program that cuts it down to 4-5 years more. Get that JD done in 3 years (4 years total)

If JDs aren't hard to get who cares how many lawyers there are. They'll just do something else when they can't find work.

Op how much economics have you studied out of curiosity? This pattern of
