It would be smart and good to figure out a way to keep minors and adults travelling together in detention together while they await (a) prosecution, and/or (b) a decision on any asylum claim. If an adult is convicted, I'm not sure what should (or does) happen to the kids. Ideally they get sent to a relative in their home country or something.
I would love to hear a proposal whereby the U.S. can enforce the immigration law and avoid separating parents/children, but I haven't heard one yet.

It’s a tough problem though. But it shows the American character. We don’t want to see children separated from families. But we have to enforce the law and be a nation of laws. People take advantage of American compassion. Separating kids from families should be offensive to Americans and shows America’s good nature. At the same time, you can’t allow things to just continue as they are and exempting kids from the laws creates a perverse incentive to use them to cross the border or bring them along. |

I think that's true, especially if the kid is with the adult in the car or whatever while they commit the crime. The difference is that (a) usually the accused criminal at least has the theoretical option of getting out on bail while they await prosecution, and (b) there's a much greater practical chance that there are relatives in the area that can take care of the kid.
Unfortunately, people don't seem to understand perverse incentives, and indirectly encouraging people to use kids as legal shields for human trafficking doesn't pull at the heart strings as viscerally has separating crying kids from parents. |

2) Hire more hanging judges to kick them the fuck out so they arent languishing in detention centers for months.
3) Update asylum policy so every person from El Salvashithole does not have a prima facie claim of harm - Sessions is doing this.
4) Build a fucking wall.
Note: for people who are applying for asylum at the border and waiting - make sure they aren't having their kids taken away (at least some seem to be - see ACLU lawsuit). If people are being held pending a hearing, stick them all together - no jail.

These people have a choice. They don't have to come. They don't have to break our laws. They also don't have to put their children in harm's way, and risk being separated from them.

Libs' end game is open borders and thus will always be scheming on how to keep large swaths of illegals here. They think keeping the families together will make it easier for them all to stay.

Promoting another huge GC boondoggle in the form of a Wall is America cutting off its nose to spite its face. GC won't allow either party to support real immigration reform, like mandatory e-verify and serious liability for any employer who hires illegals, so this is what we get instead.
Any number of alternatives are preferable: Turn families away at the border. Deport families immediately upon capture. Change asylum laws. We do not have to accept every Central American on earth simply because their countries are failed states. House families together pending outcomes on deportation/asylum. Make exceptions for violent criminals or drug smugglers if you want. |
