Was walking with a friend and our dogs through a city park this afternoon when a moose ran across our path about 10 feet in front of me. I'm not sure what had spooked it, but neither dog was harassing it. After crossing the trail, the moose ran about 15 yards up a hill and stopped. This is pretty typical stuff for Alaska, so I didn't think much of it until it attacked.

After a brief pause on the hill, the moose came running back towards the trail. I ran behind a tree with just enough time to see the moose raise up on its hind legs to stomp my friend's 15 year old deaf and blind dog. It attacked with both its front and hind legs, but fortunately none of the hits were direct and the dog escaped injury. I drew my ultralight .357 revolver loaded with .38 special self defense rounds as the moose continued into the brush which was obscuring my dog from sight.

My dog is a breed closely related to the Karelian bear dog and, like the Karelian, her breed uses speed and agility to hunt bear and other large game. I wasn't too worried about her since she could easily run circles around the moose, assuming that she recognized it as a threat. Well what she makes up in speed and beauty, she lacks in brains, and she didn't get out of the way. I heard her yelp and raised the firearm. The moose didn't pause to stomp, so I called my dog over and we began moving out of the area.

Moose aren't typically aggressive and tend to leave you alone after they've chased you off. Even so, I wasn't going to turn my back to it or holster the firearm while it was still nearby. We made it about 30 yards before the moose circled around and charged my dog again. I wasn't going to let the moose get anywhere near her this time, so I aimed in front of it and pulled the trigger, breaking the charge.

My friend called both dogs to follow him and sprinted up the trail with them while I watched the moose. I figured there was no way the moose was going to charge again now that the dogs were gone and I was walking backwards out of the area, but this was one aggressive fuckin moose. It charged me again when it was about 30 feet away. If we had been anywhere outside the city, I would have shot it in the face, but it would be front page news if something like that happened in a city park, so I aimed between its legs and pulled the trigger, scaring the moose enough to break the charge.

I caught up with my friend but didn't holster the firearm until we were at least 150 yards from the scene of the first encounter. Once out of harm's way we decided to get out of the area since the cops were almost certainly on the way and, while I would definitely report having killed a moose, I wanted to avoid answering any questions about having discharged a firearm within city limits.

Just got home and my pulse is still well above 100. I bathed my dog and she seems fine, so she doesn't appear to have been hurt by the moose. Probably going to pick up a box of hot FMJ .357 rounds to carry the next time I'm in the park because the hollow point .38 special rounds I was carrying would likely be inadequate for anything but a head shot.

Cr Alaska is 180. I live in one of the most urban neighborhoods in the biggest city in the state and earlier this month walked outside to find a black bear about 50 yards away in a neighbor’s yard. The week before that I saw two black bears in the park I was in today. Another time I encountered a MASSIVE brown bear and two cubs in our yard when we lived in a more rural part of town.

Brother, I agree 100% if we’re talking about humans, but this was a large wild animal in a city park. The whole “only draw if you intend to shoot, only shoot if you intend to kill” thing is what you’re taught in CCW class because it applies to human predators. With humans, indicating that you have a weapon or shooting to scare gives your assailant time and warning with which they may arm themselves or disarm you. This wasn’t one of those situations, and I successfully used the resources at my disposal to avoid the two potential outcomes that would have made front page news; me being attacked by a moose in a large, popular city park, or me killing a moose in a large, popular city park. I 100% stand by my decision to discharge the firearm in order to scare the moose.

The moose was close enough that a headshot wasn't out of the question and surprisingly enough, I'm far more accurate with my snub nose 342PD and 3" Model 60 than I am with my g29. Regardless, I wasn't carrying the .357 for 4 legged predators.

For moose and bear you want heavy FMJ or hardcast because you need all the penetration you can get. Hollowpoint handgun rounds are designed to deposit all of their energy between 12 and 18 inch of soft tissue. That’s sufficient for humans but nowhere near ideal for penetrating the hundreds to thousands of pounds of hair, hide, fat, muscle, and bone that you need to penetrate to kill large game.

The reason that round penetrated so far is because it’s a .357 round designed for a 4” barrel and will not expand reliably with shorter barrels. If you look at the test for the same round out of a 4” barrel, average penetration actually falls by over 10” despite the higher energy of a 4” barrel. You can see the unexpanded bullets in the pics from the same test below.

yeah i have them in .38 +p and 9mm. they seem to be pretty legit, though i might pick up some ammo designed specifically for short barrels, since my 9mm is a micro and my .357s are snub and 3"

also bought some .38 +p Critical Defense Lite rounds for when my wife carries the scandium gun.

Ty it's one of the most exciting experiences I've ever had! I was talking to my buddy recently and he said that as soon as I heard my dog yelp when the moose kicked her or whatever, I pulled the gun and began shit talking the moose. I didn't remember until he reminded me, but I started yelling things like "that's my best friend you dumb motherfucker! I'm gonna fuck you up if you don't back off, you moose piece of shit!" I remember him loling about it at the time.
