DECISION:
Last Friday, a federal court order went into effect that will limit parents and children to a maximum of 20 days in family detention centers. Two detention centers in Texas are currently holding more than 500 parents and children past the 20 day mark.
461 undocumented children and parents are currently being held at the Karnes County detention center in Texas, and 1,558 are being held at the South Texas detention center. 56 more are held at the detention center in Berks County, Pa.
U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee gave the federal government until Friday to release these families after she discovered that current family detention policy violated an almost 20-year old settlement on the detention of child migrants. Although Federal officials are working to comply with the order, they have expressed disagreement with the court’s ruling and are appealing it. |
