There are 100,000 shares now.

I need to issue a number of shares giving someone 6.25% ownership.

So I need to know how many shares to issue so that the number I issue will be 6.25% of the total.

Halp.

The best way to calculate it is by hand: Find a pan with 100,000 maggots in it (you shouldn't have a problem with that), then just separate them out until one side has 6.25% of the maggots, and then count the number of maggots.

You know that you’re gonna add some number of shares and have some total amount of shares at the end:

(1). 100,000 + (shares added) = (total resulting shares)

And you know that whatever you add will be 6.25% of that total:

(2). (share added) = .0625 * (total resulting shares)

Sub (2) into (1):

100,000 + (.0625 * (total resulting shares)) = (total resulting shares)

100,000 = .9375 * (total resulting shares)

Total Resulting Shares = 106666.67

Added Shares: 6666.67

you want .0625

start with base case of 106250 total, 6250 to give

find the percentage that 6250/106250 gives you

find the difference between this percentage and .0625, this will be the amount

do this again for 106251/6251

find the difference between this case and the base case, this will be your rate

divide amount by rate. add this number to both sides of your base case. this should get you the #? i think i run into trouble case the decimals are very small, excel cant handle the decimals and so it cant get correct answer.

Also I had to think about whether given a % relationship between total and give away could ever hit be reached more than once. Never really thought about it so swapped back and forth

there are currently 100,000 shares available for all owners. therefore, in order to give the person 6.25% ownership, the total "amount" of ownership will need to increase by a corresponding 6.25% (otherwise you will taking ownership away from the others), and a 6.25% increase of 100,000 is 106,250. since nothing changed, you give him the new shares.

tl;dr. he gets 6,250 shares.
