I’m honestly a little shocked to hear this. And a little jealous that you get to read Greene for the first time, you have some great reading ahead of you.

There are plenty of Catholic-ish writers I haven't read or only read recently. There are dozens of great authors, thousands of great books, and only so much time in one's life, sadly.

Have u read Greene, quotemo? I've read The End of the Affair, Our Man in Havana, and The Quiet American. Big fan of his writing. Our Man in Havana was probably my favorite from a pure entertainment perspective- very funny take on the spy novel.

Just very elegant prose, books are lean without any filler. Seems to capture the feel of foreign places well.

I can see the argument because they're so well constructed, but if you don't really buy into his catholicism theme and how it drives the characters, something like The End of the Affair seems like a sort of prim contrived "serious novel". I haven't read enough, but I think I'm more drawn to his more "entertainment" novels, anyway, since spy novels are one of the few genre novels I like.

what do you mean by being so well constructed? how could a novel be good without being well constructed?

Franzen probably thinks more pointless meandering sprawl makes a novel more true or something.

Something about his writing feels so distinctly British to me. More like Ishiguro, McEwan, Julian Barnes, than any recent American novelists I can think of.

End of the Affair is great--technically difficult. For me, the best is The Power and the Glory. Also, the novella and screenplay for the Third Man

Greene is a must read for any good, well-read Catholic. Power and the Glory and The Quiet American are great. Anyone see any of the two Quiet American movies? Worth watching?

Saw the Michael Caine version 5 or so years ago, just read the book recently. It was pretty good, maybe a near-miss. I'll probably watch it again after having just read the book.

Caine movie was pretty good but hard to measure up to the book which was a masterpiece

End of the affair was one of the GOAT for me but partly because I was in a relationship like the one in the book and it was mind blowing that he could write it all so concisely

Beyond just the stories his word craft is brilliant

But Jonathan franzen thinks he’s over rated so...
