Not opposed to spending more if it would increase speed, but seems odd to spend $500 when that's half the cost of the bike but IDK.

If you're comfortable with knowing what size you need, i would recommend buying used for value. Shimano 105/Sram Rival or above for your components.

I bought a Specialized Crosstrail (midrange hybrid) about 10 years ago and was just beating up the factory wheels the first six months. Put on some Rhynolite Sun rims that were part of a custom wheel build and haven't had an issue since. Easily the best $125 I've spent on a bicycle upgrade.
