I assumed every firm let you expense food essentially every night but apparently this is not true outside NYC? Please explain.

Ya, went from NYC biglaw to non-SF/NYC biglaw and found this was totally gone. Still in place if you're at a predominantly NYC satellite office, e.g., DPW in DC or something.

Non-NYC firms have a lot less leverage and often lower billing rates, so containing costs is bigger. Clients are also tighter on expenses when it's not a big M&A thing.

Technically yes but it’s rarely if ever done - just like free car rides home at night. It’s a phantom perk.

You can but no one does it with the regularity you are asking about in your OP. Not enough people stay that late.

Even when I stay late, I don't get food usually. I'd rather just wait, take a car at 10:00 p.m. and eat healthy stuff at home. Eating out 2x daily is a great way to get fat.

I can but don't anymore because I got so sick of the delivery options and I'd rather go home 30 minutes earlier than to stop working and walk somewhere good. Now I only order if I'm starving and can't wait.

Based off these responses I guess NYC Biglaw does pay more. I probably get 5-10k per year in food/car fringe benefits alone.

No, you're missing the point. People are saying it's not needed most of the time because non-NYC work less. Your "fringe" benefit of a $25 seamless meal nets your firm $1000 extra in billables every night.

Also, NYC biglaw are a bunch of whining babies because they don't get into the office until 11 am everyday.

Sometimes non NYC biglaw folks leave early enough to go to the gym and eat dinner with friends and family.

It's awful.

This is very possible in NYC too if you don't work at one of the major sweatshops.
