So like, Singapore right?
It's immaculately clean. Everything functions perfectly, public transport, police, fire fighting systems.
80 percent of housing is public housing that is clean and well kept.
The population is very diverse yet there is no social strife. Any hint of racism or bigotry is met with incredible force.
There is a wide ranging and very deep surveillance system. There are restrictions on the internet. Mainly, people are happy to trade the notion of privacy for security or perceived security.
There is strict government control, however Singapore is very capitalist and deeply integrated into the global economy. If one works and plays by the rules, one is rewarded handsomely. Drinking age is 18 and prostitution is legal and regulated.
For the most part, contrary to Western notions of freedom and free democracy, Singapore has blended a form of capitalism with very strict but discreet control. The weird thing is, it seems to work.
But there's still something about it I can't quite put my finger on that creeps me out. I can't deny that it works, but something about it doesn't sit right. It's almost as if the government in power has honed its presence and control so artfully the population is not only under its thumb, but totally content with the arrangement.

theres tons of funding for artsy shit. there's even more funding for entrepreneurship.
there are tons of blue collar workers too, the backbone of the economy, its just those jobs suck and you wouldnt want to do it. there's no chill park ranger type job with it being entirely urban. youll be working in some shitty factory or something, but tons of people do it.

chinese people prefer strict authority, it's in their DNA
they are biologically different from white westerners, who are much more individualistic

forget the exact rules, but maids are highly regulated.
get mandatory one day a week off, get STD/pregnancy tested every 6 months (kicked out if fail), special type of visa where employer posts bond, if maid fucks up, the money is gone and so is maid.
some other weird rules about this.

"-there's some kind of drive in the Western soul that demands Real Freedom, something that's willing to eschew social harmony and material comfort for the sake of the pursuit of the unknowable, or even, at times, some kind of Immanence"
This is scholarship. There is a drive in the Western spirit, particularly the American spirit, for True Freedom, which is almost a religious idea or has a religious foundation. A society and people not compelled by any force or government to behave a certain way. A society founded on the idea of people working together without any coercion - absolute (for the most part) freedom.

To be honest, I think you're over stating the difference between 'Asians' and 'The West" in creating the conditions in Singapore. I think its much more a product of circumstances. You have to remember that Singapore became independent from the UK as part of Malaysia (hence the SI in the name), and was economically about on the same footing as its neighbors at the time. Then, it was unceremoniously kicked out of Malaysia for complaining about policies meant to give ethnic Malays opportunities at the expense of other races. There was a lot of angst about Singapore's ability to survive as an independent city state at all, particularly with potentially hostile neighbors dominated by Muslims surrounding the island. The PAP, for all its faults, was able to provide stability and reassurance to the population, and, more importantly, massive economic growth, to the extent that Singapore today is one of the richest countries in the world on a per capita basis. All a Singaporean has to do is take a quick trip to Jakarta to see what the alternative may have looked like. The populace was willing to accept some restraints in exchange for tangible results, and it seems like a rational response honestly. Nowadays, there is not much of an existential threat, and the younger people have only known a rich Singapore, thus you see more pushback against the overbearingness of the government, and against the PAP as a ruling party. I imagine this will only accelerate with time.

It's everything the US isn't. It has no guns. It has no real crime. It overtly tries to prevent racism even if it still exists. It has efficient public transportation, one of the best airports in world, and cheap education and universal heathcare and also a good retirement system. It still retains its traditional Indian, Chinese and Malay culture while being modern whereas the US destroys traditional culture for commercialized whoredom.
In other words Singapore is good, the US is shit. DET TO AMERIKKKA

It’s not alien that it’s nice. It’s very nice. What I’m saying is it’s something about how they achieved this contrived “niceness” that creeps me out. And like many have pointed out it’s hard to argue with little to no crime, high standard of living, great housing and infrastructure. But even still...
As much as I complain about the E train and bums, why does the grittiness of nyc that I loathe suddenly give me a pang of nostalgia? Bc nyc in spite of its faults is genuine. Does that make sense? And I know Singapore is “genuine” in its own way. It’s authoritarian harmony. It’s just what’s beneath the surface, the grand shadow behind it, that gives me pause.
