ITT: a bunch of non-parents. In reality/non-Tiger parent scenarios, it will depend on the kid. If your kid is a fucking beast on the cello or really personable or natural STEM oriented and talented when they’re old enough to attempt to master some more conplex stuff (say ages 11-14), you help to cultivate the thing they are good at and love to do. When they try something and suck at it you help them to learn from that. You are also up front with them about them having to learn about money and household finances. Then when they’re in high school you make it clear what it will take to reach certain outcomes and you regularly prompt them to think about their life goals (including most importantly “do you want to get married and have kids?”) and what it will take to get there. The point of this process is for them to arrive at a goal for a first career that matches the expected outcomes of the path they choose and to give them the tools and self-confidence to make their way from there. Then you help them to remember to regularly check back in and reassess that picture they have in their head of their desired future.

The lazy, stupid mistake that boomer parents made was saying “just go to a good school and get good grades” which isn’t a way to teach a kid any skills about how to find their path through GC that minimizes chances of various shitty outcomes. You end up with people like most of this bort who go to law school or whatever because they are intimidated by the thought of finding a job they might like more and working hard because they like it and are good at it, proving themselves and building confidence, and changing things up if they don’t work. That’s the way to avoid raising robots who are terrified of failure, so they try to find paths like law school and med school where credentialism can get them most of the way to financial security, and they just have to not be an outlier in terms of poor performance to fuck it up. In an ideal world I also make enough money to be able to give my kids a bit of seed money if they get to be experts in some field and want to start their own business.

I always lol when I see middle-aged execs now talking about how their kids that they encouraged not to strive are now entering the workforce to shitty jobs. They generally say things like "they're still finding themselves" or "they're following their hearts" but you can tell that they're disappointed. That is because a lot of this is BS not grounded in reality and fundamentals. Grades, colleges and $$$s are ultimately what determine life most for 99% of people.

You really don't hear this story from serious smart/driven people about their kids (sometimes they have kids who are rebellious, weird fuckups but usually not just aimless losers).

Sometimes it really is because they fell for the boomerisms ("don't strive! I went to work for corporate America and I wish I pursued ART instead!"). Well, choices have consequences.

Who cares, you’ll be long dead anyway.

There are lots of people I know who have normal jobs where they will cap out at $150k or whatever. They went to college and can support themselves fine, but can’t buy a house, have multiple kids or live an upper middle class life in a large city without parents’ down payment or giving them a house and a small nest egg. If your parents have money, then no need to strive to obtain the upper middle class lifestyle which is all you get from striving anyway. They can even buy a $60k suv.

Right, but there's benefit to having kids learn to strive and have ambition and not just rely on mommy and daddy's money. Like Angry Jew tp and RSF for example, you can see that isn't a good thing.

RSF and the like are extreme examples. Striving is different from just being a non lazy individual who is financially responsible. The average example are people who have normal jobs, got average grades, went to average schools, work 40/week, as an accountant making $120k or whatever in their 30s. There’s no reason why you have to push your kid to get a better outcome than that when you can help out along the way with school tuition, down payments etc. they get to live easier lives than people making $400k without the family help.

I fundamentally disagree. Your kids have a) your genetics (which, isn't average) and b) your financial support in getting good grades, paying for good schools, etc. Therefore, one should expect better results. In turn, you expect them to pass on those benefits to their children when the time comes. You have fallen for American Boomer BS of encouraging mediocrity.

Actually it’s you who has fallen for the boomer scam that more effort and paying for a good education means better results. Making it takes a lot of luck and connections. It’s pretty random. More than half of my graduating law school class would be considered failures under your definition and an even higher proportion of my college class. If those people can’t make it, who can.

I’d rather my kids take it easy in life and enjoy themselves rather than kill themselves working hard only to realize that their efforts are mostly for naught.

"Actually it’s you who has fallen for the boomer scam that more effort and paying for a good education means better results."

No, that's common sense. And the way you know it isn't a Boomer scam is because a) that has always been true, and b) it isn't just true in the US. OTOH, this whole "you don't need to try to be successful, just find YOURSELF, mommy and daddy will protect you with their money" nonsense is new, Boomertastic BS.

"Making it takes a lot of luck and connections. It’s pretty random."

It isn't random. When good jobs see better schools, grades and other prestige signals on a resume they react in a "non-random" way.

"More than half of my graduating law school class would be considered failures under your definition and an even higher proportion of my college class"

I question this since this isn't even true at my LS, which is a mere 7-14, instead of your HYS. Further, do you want to compare to your average third or fourth tier LS?

"If those people can’t make it, who can."

To the extent some "don't make it", plenty are not making it because mommy and daddy are footing the bill so there's little incentive to do so. I know several IRL examples off the top of my head.

"I’d rather my kids take it easy in life and enjoy themselves rather than kill themselves working hard only to realize that their efforts are mostly for naught."

I disagree. I pushed hard and my wife pushed hard, which is why we're doing well. I know that if we didn't because we could rely on mommy and daddy's money that we would both have ended up with absolute SPS careers. That isn't a good thing and we would be different people with less drive and success. I want to pass that drive on to my kids. Part of that is knowing that while we'll support them in their efforts, if they fail that failure is on them and they will live with it. We won't bail them out, so if they want to keep living well, they will need to succeed.

In what fantasy world do you live in where better education and more effort leads to better results? That worked when schooling was cheap, you could stay in a company for decades and retire with a fat pension and live the good life in your 4br house that cost $80k. Many, many people did not recover from ITE and not due to lack of effort or prestige. It’s funny that you think you and Mandy recovered due solely to your efforts when you also had luck on your side. To not acknowledge that is to just ignore a fundamental reality that so much of life is being at the right place at the right time. I highly doubt I could even get into an Ivy League school if I applied now as opposed to 20 years ago. The competition nowadays is insane. It is no longer a given that the generation below you will do better than the previous generation.

I’m perfectly happy with my kids relying on mommy and daddy giving them a decent life (so long as they’re not totally aimless, ungrateful shits). There is no point in my striving if my children don’t reap the benefits of it and have less pressure and more happiness. I don’t need so much money anyway.

"In what fantasy world do you live in where better education and more effort leads to better results?"

What world do you live in that it doesn't? You and I are perfect examples of this. I don't for a second think that without my credentials that I would have a decent job.

"That worked when schooling was cheap, you could stay in a company for decades and retire with a fat pension and live the good life in your 4br house that cost $80k."

Those aren't necessary for the statement to be true at all. If you work hard, get good grades, get into a good school, study something useful, then you're very likely to do much better than someone who is a loser and sucks at school and either goes to a shit school, no school or majors in BS.

"I highly doubt I could even get into an Ivy League school if I applied now as opposed to 20 years ago"

Yet, you would get into a decent school, could have gotten decent grades, could have gotten on a good path that would have resulted in good pay. I attended good schools but not as good and ended up with a solid result (though, I focused on a more STEM-oriented path which is easier).

"It is no longer a given that the generation below you will do better than the previous generation."

Of course not, but where you end up within the next generation depends on the same factors as before, even if that next generation is poorer overall (which, it will be).

"I’m perfectly happy with my kids relying on mommy and daddy giving them a decent life (so long as they’re not totally aimless, ungrateful shits)"

Look around and think about this statement. What do you actually see? Yep, they're always ungrateful shits beyond what they have to say to you to keep the money flowing. To others, they are arrogant assholes because they started on third base.

"There is no point in my striving if my children don’t reap the benefits of it and have less pressure and more happiness"

I also disagree. You live a good life in an expensive area which you couldn't afford without your salary. Also, if they do strive they still benefit tremendously from having parents that can pay for their education and get them started in life. That isn't the same as telling them not to strive at all.

You’ve created a narrative for your outcome that lays all the credit to your “striving,” without regard for randomness and luck. Life is hard and often unfair and my own particular outcome is proof of that. I don’t consider myself to be a prime example of striving bringing good results at all. I am acutely aware of how different my life could be right now, despite all the prestige and work. I am also acutely aware that life can easily change in a second, so never get too comfortable or think you deserve anything because you happen to be smart or work hard or whatever. Those are values that I intend to pass down, and that has nothing to do with striving for grades, money etc.

The other problem is that you’re hardwired to tolerate and even embrace striving, and not everyone is built that way. Forcing your perspective on a child who may not be built that way is the surefire way to ruin your relationship. The goal in having kids is not to make mini tmf/Mandy robots. I can tell you right now that your black and white perspective on how people and life operate is going to create insane levels of aggravation when you actually have kids who have their own personalities and ideas. It might even ruin your and/or your kid’s life.

Kids that are smart will do well for themselves regardless of whether they attend Princeton or Georgia Tech. There is no good reason to encourage wasting money or emotional wellbeing on shit like that.

It’s also ignoring that there are various paths to success and happiness in life beyond just having money, working hard, getting good grades etc. the individual person has to figure out what their goals are and how best to achieve them. I’ll do my best to help them figure out their strengths and to achieve their goals. But I’m certainly not going to tell them what their goals are since it’s not my life.

Tmf and Mandy think it’s only natural that their children are programmed like them. They may be in for a shock.

Maybe we are talking past each other. I think if "striving" as meaning being obsessed with grades, class rank, school rank/prestige, job prestige, and $$$. Private school instead of public school. Padding resumes with extracurriculars for college admission. Paying $$ for a prestigious liberal arts college instead of in-state tuition at your state flagship school. Following a medicine, banking, or law path becuase of $$ and prestige. That sort of thing.

If you are using the term "strive" in a more generic "do your best" or "shoot for the stars" kind of sense, then we probably agree on a lot.

Sure $$ matters, but placing undue importance on it I think leads to less happiness.

I intend to teach them to consider financial implications of their decisions as they get older (my boy is already kind of obsessed with the idea of lending, interest, and stock ownership), but I firmly believe that, e.g., someone who is able to run their own business doing something they enjoy is probably going to have a more holistically successful life than a biglaw partner or investment banker. That may entail a lot of risk and hard work, but not "striving."

I don't think that's true. I mean, obviously the business needs to be profitable to be sustainable (or at least well off enough to pay the owner/operators), but I know people who started bars/restaurants because they love beer and food, not because they think they'll get rich.

I could absolutely make a lot more money either by trying to expand my firm's business or by joining up with some other firm, but I don't want to. I enjoy the control over my own hours and the greater downtime despite making less $$$.

The generation after that is sitting in Ohio watching the Buckeyes before heading to their jobs and accountants or compliance people or whatever shit jobs they have. Thus, the wealth is squandered.

Because it’s a 180 as fuck place to spend your college years. I get that as a slavic strivebot with no soul, you don’t understand stuff like enjoyment and fun.

LOL you dumb prole. You live off interest, you don’t spend the principle. Gettingn richer by being rich is how you make $, not by being a cog COMPLIANCECUCK. You literally have the mindset of a grubby slav prole from Brighton Beach, which I guess is what you are.

You don't "live off interest", you live off checks daddy sends you. That's a little different. LOL @ you giving advice as though you are some self-made rich guy.

Such lies. You absolutely ARE a self-made rich guy and not some pot smoking loser that hasn't accomplished anything in his life and that is fully dependant on daddy's check.

Also, I get that you're trying to say your parents will croak and leave you so much money and you will never touch the money, only live off interest but I don't believe you and even if you do your kids won't. I won't even talk about inflation.

LOL at you pretending you’ve ever accomplished anything. What exactly? Getting a worse job than I did out of LS then getting fired for being an idiot and grinding for 10 years to get back to 1st year assoc wages? LJL. If I needed the $, I would have stayed at my job, since I quit, and didn’t get fired like you (since you’re an idiot).

As for your prole level understanding of wealth, no need to correct you since you’ll never have any.

Your ugrad? Shit.

Your law school? Shit.

Anything that isn't shit is 100% due to daddy's money.

Your single item of remote success is what, being a 1st year somewhere once upon a time (which I did too, and no, wasn't "fired for incompetence" though I wonder if you were).

"If I needed the $, I would have stayed at my job, since I quit, and didn’t get fired like you (since you’re an idiot)"

A convenient story since you're a compulsive liar on here, but there's no way in hell you would succeeded in biglaw since you're dumb and lazy all at the same time.

So let’s see while I spent college playing sports, joining a frat and generally having an awesome time, you spent it locked in the library being a weird incel superstud geek, all so you could go to a LS ranked 10 spots better.

Then in LS while I skipped class and partied and went on trips, you continued to be a weird incel geek sitting at home superstudying. All so I could get a job paying more $ than you. On top of that, you then got FIRED for being DUMB as FUCK and worked for basically minimum wage for a decade and you somehow think this was a good outcome for you?

LOL. Sounds like you put in 100x the effort to just get BLOWN OUT at every step.

As for “dumb and lazy,” only ONE of us got SHITCANNED, so looks like a certain slav midget PROLE is projecting. LJL

tl;dr version: you admit that you're lazy and it is clear that but for daddy's money you would be a loser. Thanks for your contribution.

Nah, you can’t really teach someone to strive. You either are born with the gene or not. I would like for them to not be lazy and unfocused layabouts though. Hopefully with their parents as examples and the environment they’re in, they won’t be. I will encourage them to pursue something they’re good at and interested in. How much money and education they get are not that important.

Plus I’m going to make sure they live a comfortable life without having to strive anyway but they just won’t know it until they’re like in their 30s once they’ve proven that theyre not completely useless. If they’re major fuckups, it’ll just go to other kids in the family who aren’t.

No. Striving, at its base, is about doing what is necessary to best position yourself for the next step in some ludicrous itinerary for life. Focusing one's efforts on gaming the system for sole purpose of powering up to the next level creates horrible, empty people.

I will do everything in my power to instill in my kids the importance of applying themselves fully to whatever task is at hand, whether that is schoolwork, sports, or mowing the yard. The same principle goes for their relationships with the people in their lives.
