The lazy, stupid mistake that boomer parents made was saying “just go to a good school and get good grades” which isn’t a way to teach a kid any skills about how to find their path through GC that minimizes chances of various shitty outcomes. You end up with people like most of this bort who go to law school or whatever because they are intimidated by the thought of finding a job they might like more and working hard because they like it and are good at it, proving themselves and building confidence, and changing things up if they don’t work. That’s the way to avoid raising robots who are terrified of failure, so they try to find paths like law school and med school where credentialism can get them most of the way to financial security, and they just have to not be an outlier in terms of poor performance to fuck it up. In an ideal world I also make enough money to be able to give my kids a bit of seed money if they get to be experts in some field and want to start their own business.

There are lots of people I know who have normal jobs where they will cap out at $150k or whatever. They went to college and can support themselves fine, but can’t buy a house, have multiple kids or live an upper middle class life in a large city without parents’ down payment or giving them a house and a small nest egg. If your parents have money, then no need to strive to obtain the upper middle class lifestyle which is all you get from striving anyway. They can even buy a $60k suv.

I disagree. I pushed hard and my wife pushed hard, which is why we're doing well. Part of that is knowing that while we'll support them in their efforts, if they fail that failure is on them and they will live with it. We won't bail them out, so if they want to keep living well, they will need to succeed.

Forcing your perspective on a child who may not be built that way is the surefire way to ruin your relationship. The goal in having kids is not to make mini tmf/Mandy robots. I intend to teach them to consider financial implications of their decisions as they get older (my boy is already kind of obsessed with the idea of lending, interest, and stock ownership), but I firmly believe that, e.g., someone who is able to run their own business doing something they enjoy is probably going to have a more holistically successful life than a biglaw partner or investment banker. That may entail a lot of risk and hard work, but not "striving."

I don't think that's true. I mean, obviously the business needs to be profitable to be sustainable (or at least well off enough to pay the owner/operators), but I know people who started bars/restaurants because they love beer and food, not because they think they'll get rich.

I could absolutely make a lot more money either by trying to expand my firm's business or by joining up with some other firm, but I don't want to. I enjoy the control over my own hours and the greater downtime despite making less $$$.
