"While inflation is expected to remain low, investors should expect the nominal rate of return on their investments to be in the range of 3% to 5%, compared with historical averages of 9% to 11%, a panel of Vanguard economists said."

I have one of those on top of my 401k, bro. Unfortunately big banks are cheap with the defined benefit pensions. They put 3% of my annual comp in there and it only earns 4% per year. But they also give me a 5% 401k match so I'm not complaining about the 8% free money.

Buffett himself says this is a bad idea, simply because "it's harder to double the value of a 100BB company than a 1BB one" and that makes sense to me.

People experienced the 2008 crash and saw the movie "The Big Short" and now they all think they're market wizards. Like you've said, these goons have been "predicting" the crash will come any day now for the past 5 years.

I always assume 3-5% annual growth when calculating my retirement. Anything higher seems irresponsible to simply assume.

No idea how much I'll NEED - I can't predict future prices and shit.

But if I take the retirement savings I have today, assume that my annual contributions stay the same, and assume 4% annual growth, I would end up with $2.5 million by age 60.

Probably I'll be able to increase my contributions over time so it would be more like $3 million. But $2.5 million is the conservative estimate.

The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead. Economists set themselves too easy, too useless a task if in tempestuous seasons they can only tell us that when the storm is past the ocean is flat again.
