The point is that Crimea specifically was Russian territory for a very long time and was only given to Ukraine as a symbolic gesture. Most people there are Russian and wanted to be part of Russia. There's no sensible reason to have them be part of Ukraine.
I think Ukrainian nationalism is generally retarded, but I understand that other than Crimea and a few places like Donbass, most of Ukraine doesn't want to become a part of Russia. |

Except that it isn't. Ukraine is bleeding money and people. This isn't to say they should have been "anti-Western" either. Just taken a smart middle road, which is what Yanukovich was attempting to do before yet another ridiculous color revolution. The disastrous results (which would be significantly worse but for handouts and loans that they have no ability to repay) are ignored in the name of Ukrainian nationalism. It is totally and utterly absurd.

I actually agree with the first part. But if they weren't provoked and the reactionary response wasn't triggered, then everyone would be better off. The second - I'm not sure what you think Russia is going to do. Assuming no one does anything else, I don't think they have some grand plan.

It could have been avoided by the West not supporting Chechnya, Georgia, Ukrainian nationalists, Syrian "moderate Islamist rebels" and adding former Soviet territories as NATO members.
