it is so simple. when i learned this my immediate reaction was not to resist it, but so many people do. why?

if anything it should be RELIEVING (and therefore immediately attractive) to know that you don't have to bother with bullshit fad diets or some combination of tricks to lose weight..

my dad is trying to lose weight, but he insists the reason he isn't successful CANNOT be because of not being in caloric deficit. rather he blames "hormones" in food, his metabolism, and carbohydrates.

For CO - let's say your motivation to go swimming every day - this is affected by CI. 1k calories of queso, albeit delicious, does not have the same practical effects as 1k CI of chicken and veggies, and like you mentioned the frequency of the CI. (1k of queso in all at once surely makes your body and mind react differently than 1k chicken and veggies spaced out moderately).

CI/CO is like a post-hoc caloric accounting definition that ignores how we can react differently to different types of calories. But when you start to condition on information that isn't fully complete - do you really think someone attempting a diet will be just as successful on 2k cheetos as 2k fish and veggies? Of course not.

calories in is easier, especially given labelling, but many things you eat will not be labelled, some labels will be wrong, and your estimates for certain items are likely to be very wrong.

calories out is impossible to reliably measure. everyone's base metabolic rate will be different, and the amount of calories you burn will likely differ from day to day based on diet and activity, both of which will affect your metabolism. furthermore, any attempt to measure 'calories burned' from exercise is going to be inexact.

tl;dr "calories in/calories out" is meaningless advice because its impossible to measure accurately

My wife claims to eat 1200 a day and doesn’t lose a pound when she should probably be losing at least a pound a week. She’s obviously missing it by a lot. People are horrendously bad at counting calories. It often requires estimating portions, etc.

Calories in/calories out is bad advice. Especially since people are wont to do stupid stuff like eat 400 calories of chips and then feel hungry as hell.

Eat less, eat cleaner is better advice. Going cold turkey on shit food is alomst a necessity while losing weight.
