Just getting started on it, seems great so far.
One of the best buys in my hometown has the wayfarer edition in stock so I'm having my little sister grab it with in store pickup and ship it to me. Cloth map, coin, and popup book with game scene dioramas . . . Unnnnnnngh

JFC, this game is fucking awesome. Looks gorgeous, nice soundtrack, has some decently done voice acting at key points, interesting battle system.
Most importantly, MATURE storylines, no silly weeb shit, no whiny 16 y/o long haired faggot protagonists thus far, you play as adults doing adult shit. I did the dancer first and she starts off working the stages in servitude, getting pounded out under threat of death from the dance hall owner, all biding her time hoping to find the ppl who killed her father. At one point you even have to work the streets for johns.
So far I've beat the first segment of one story and started another, my thought as someone who has played just about every notable jrpg since Dragon Warrior on the NES is that this is the real fucking deal and will go down as one of the GOATs. It is miles, MILES better than the shit jrpgs being pumped out these days.

Yeah but you neglect to mention that there isn't anything else and Zelda is much better at 4k 60fps on an emulator.
There's Xenoblade 2, which might be ok but didn't really grab me due to the shit main character so I made no progress in it (and also the graphics are really bad, very low resolution). The Mario/Rayman crossover game is OK.
That's a really thin library.

TO- played a bit back in the day and remember it being decently tough, easily the most complex of these games
TCS - game has been lauded for its world building but honestly the plot draaaaags. Nothing really happens most of the game, which is very long, then it kicks into overdrive near the end and gets really interesting. Battle system a bit bland. Only play if you intend to jump right into the second game too.
BOF - Obviously these are the retro games here. I've heard 2 is the best but ironically that's the one I haven't played. They're decent but nothing original that you NEED to see.
Xenoblade - looks like shit on the Wii but can be prettied up on the PC to run at 4k 60fps with extra draw distance and better textures. Action battle system that is a bit simplistic. Story is reasonably original. If you go the emulator route the world is quite beautiful and enjoyable to explore.
I'd think Xenoblade or Tactics Ogre would be the picks, although TCS is good if you like the anime style slice of life bullshit.

Started playing it today. I’m really enjoying it!
Reminds me of ff6/ct with a bit of saga thrown in. Really fast combat system and a great soundtrack.
I think this game works really well with the portability of the Switch. I’m going on a two night work trip out Monday and back home late Wednesday and think I’m gojnf to drop at least 15-20 hours into this game during this game.

OK here's a fucking PROTIP. Once you get a few characters recruited, look at this and go grab whatever jobs are near the towns you've been to.
https://www.primagames.com/games/octopath-traveler/tips/how-unlock-jobs-octopath-traveler
These shrines are probably in higher lvl areas than you can handle, but there aren't any enemies inside, you just get the new job without having to do anything. Cyrus has a lower encounter rate support skill that can help you get to them.
They make characters a lot more viable. For example, the white mage is really limited because most battles involve pumping out damage asap rather than healing, but give her the black mage as a subjob and she's much better.
Also, for the merchant the donate BP skill is sick, lets you hit first turn with a max power skill with whatever character the enemies are weak to. I originally thought the merchant was weak but a BP Donate + a dancer buff will let you throw out absolute BOMBS on the first turn and shred through encounters at reasonable mana cost.

Some other shit I found, without being too spoilerish.
-If you're wondering wtf to use your money on, saving $75k is a good target. If you use the merchant on all the NPCs in chapter 2 towns, you'll likely find some really good shit in that price range
-in Ophelia's chapter 2 town there is a sick bow in the church that you can steal by save-scumming since the success rate is 3%. There is also a really powerful knight outside the church that you can allure with about a 20% rate. If you're stuck, he can do some massive fucking damage and get you over the hump with 0 grinding
-not much reason to buy middling items and weapons, you find a shitload stealing. Save your money for some real impact shit
-if you want to jump ahead and try to make it to a town in a higher lvl enemy area, it's usually worth it if you can get there
-think about whether each character will prioritize physical or magic long term and who the damage dealers will be. Subjobs can be swapped freely but nuts in this game give huge stat boosts so you'll want to specialize. There are some in the farthest north town that can give +35 to a stat.

Yeah, once you get some flexibility with your party and gear you can set shit up to WRECK bosses. There are some obscene items either stealable or buyable from characters in the chapter 2 towns. One place has a +100 elemental attack accessory that tressa can buy for 6000. There are also some OP staffs but they're pretty expensive.
But basically, dancer buff + BP donate from a merchant + magic from a character stacked with elemental attack will RAPE everything including bosses. My Cyrus was so stacked when I got the right stuff that I was able to kill enemies in a lvl 45 danger area at lvl 27.
